This chapter describes testing methodology for the Cisco BCS Verified Designs. The testing methodology was created with the help and support of the field representatives, these field representatives included:
•Cisco Commercial SEs
•Cisco Enterprise SEs
•Cisco Service Provider SEs
After the configurations and testing requirements were decided upon that information was then taken to the Business Unit (BU) to let them know what would be tested. The Business Units then recommended specific versions of the Cisco IOS software.
The requested tests from the field included both single and multisite solutions with:
•Cisco CallManager Express (Cisco CME)
•Cisco Unity Express
The WAN was a hub and spoke Frame Relay network, seen to be the most widely used WAN solution for the commercial market. All spokes were configured with a full T1 of bandwidth between the spoke and the hub. It is understood this is not a valid configuration that would be used in the field; it was used to stress-test the sites.
The routing protocol chosen for these tests was Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP). EIGRP was chosen for the following reasons:
•It was recommended by a few SEs in the field.
•The amount of convergence time.
•The protocol is simple and widely used.
Each remote site was set up with the appropriate router for the number of IP phones it would support. In some cases the number of phones tested was not the maximum number that the router was capable of supporting.
Each site also had a Cisco Catalyst 3560 switch and at least two real Cisco IP phones configured. The remaining number of the Cisco IP phones to make up the total were simulated using the SimClient application.
Testing the single-site solution consisted of stress-testing the solution with both voice and data, and then testing features associated with both Cisco CME and Cisco Unity Express.
With the multisite solution, networking was tested across the WAN for both Cisco Unity Express and Cisco CallManager Express. Then Cisco CallManager and Cisco Unity were added to test full networking among the voice products:
•Cisco CME and Cisco CME networking
•Cisco CME and Cisco CallManager networking
•Cisco Unity Express and Cisco Unity Express networking
•Cisco Unity Express and Cisco Unity networking
Figure 8 shows a multisite solution with a redundant 144-user office.
