Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utilities

Cisco provides the following diagnostics utilities for Cisco UCS C-Series Servers:

  1. Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utility —The Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utility is an application that helps you to:

    • View server inventory.

    • Perform interactive offline diagnostics.

    • View server health and logs.

    For more information on performing these tasks, see the latest version of the Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utility User Guide.

    Beginning with release 6.1(3a), NI-IOD is supported by Python release 3.0.

  2. Cisco UCS UEFI Diagnostics Utility Cisco UCS UEFI Diagnostics Utility application helps you perform various CPU, Memory, HDD, OS, Video, and Drivers test in UEFI shell. Test logs can be transferred to a USB drive.


    Note

    Cisco UCS UEFI Diagnostics Utility can run only on BIOS UEFI mode. BIOS legacy mode is not supported.


You can download the ISO images for Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utility and Cisco UCS UEFI Diagnostics Utility from Software Download.

This release notes provides information about both the utilities. Both these utilities follow different release schedules. The information provided in this release notes applies to both the utilities unless specified otherwise.

Hardware Requirements for Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utilities

The following are the minimum hardware requirements for UCS Server Diagnostics Utility:

  • CD-ROM Drive—A USB CD/DVD-ROM drive is required to be able to boot and run the UCS Server Diagnostics Utility. You can also use the virtual media option in the Cisco IMC KVM to boot UCS Server Diagnostics Utility.

  • Mouse—Some functions require a standard mouse (USB) for navigation.

  • RAM—A minimum of 4 GB RAM. If the available RAM is less than the minimum recommended value, UCS Server Diagnostics Utility will not function properly.

New Features in Release 6.2(3b)

UEFI diagnostics supports the following features:

  • CPU tests

  • Memory tests

  • Video controller/GPU tests

  • HDD tests

New Features In Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utility

New Features in Release 6.2(3d)

Beginning with release 6.2(3d), SDU supports the following features:

  • Non-Volatile DIMM Quick test (NVDIMM)

New Features in Release 6.2(3b)

Beginning with release 6.2(3b), SDU supports the following features:

  • Enhanced disk tests

  • Added new tests - NVMe drive test and GPU tests

New Features in Release 6.2(3a)

Beginning with release 6.2(3a), SDU supports the following features:

  • Enhanced CPU and memory tests:

    • SEL parser framework, used by the CPU and memory tests to find any correctable or configuration errors.

    • Enhanced memory Stress Test - Consists of "24 different tests" with customizable memory limit settings and time-out settings.

    • Updated test log summary with "User Recommendations" for various CPU and DIMM errors.

New Features in Release 6.1(3a)

Beginning with release 6.1(3a), SDU supports secure boot.


Note

BMC should be running release 4.1(3b) or later for SDU to support secure boot.


Resolved Caveats for Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utility

Release 6.0(4)

  • CSCvp73840

    Symptom: CSP-5228 hangs when trying to boot the Diagnostic image.

    Workaround: None

Release 6.0(1)

  • CSCve50599

    Symptom: CPU stream test fails on the UCS C460 M4 server with the V4 CPU.

    Workaround: None

Open Caveats for Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utility

Release 5.0(1)

  • CSCvc73352

    Symptom: The Server Diagnostic Utility does not discover the RAID adapter on the C3260 M4 server.

    Workaround: None.

Known Behaviors and Limitations for Cisco UCS Server Diagnostics Utility

Release 6.2(3a)

  • CSCwc47058

    Symptom: SDU boots to EULA screen on triggering F7 Diagnostics. Tests are not started automatically and snapshot file is not pushed to BMC.

    Workaround:

    Perform the following steps:

    1. Manually boot the SDU ISO.

    2. Start the quick test from the Quick Tasks tab.

      You can view the results on the SDU GUI and download the results as a snapshot file.

  • CSCwc49231

    Symptom: SDU 2.0 : SDU ISO size is more than 256 MB, does not fit on SDU partition in flexUtil.

    Workaround:

    1. Rename the ISO from ucs-cxxx-diag-<version>.iso to ucs-cxxx-scu-<version>.iso.

    2. Upload on the SCU partition and use the updated ISO.

Release 6.0(4)

  • CSCvo90058

    Symptom: Number of DIMMs displayed in Server Diagnostics Utility (SDU) GUI is lesser than the actual populated numbers.This issue is observed on S3260 M5 platforms with 4.0(4b) Cisco IMC and BIOS firmware.

    SDU CLI (server memory) is displaying the correct list of populated DIMMs.

Release 5.0(1)

  • CSCvc19881

    Symptom: A traceback exception error is seen on the Non Interactive Server Diagnostic Utility. This happens when you use Python version 2.6.

    Workaround: Use Python version 2.7 on the utility.
