Solving DTMF problems on Cisco acquired TANDBERG/Codian products

In an auto attendant, you can use the number keys on your endpoint to navigate through the menus; this is called ‘DTMF navigation mode’. DTMF navigation mode enables you to use the number keys 2, 4, 6, and 8 in the place of up, left, right, and down respectively.

Note: When in DTMF navigation mode, you will not be able to use the number keys to enter the numeric ID of a conference.

Sending DTMF tones to an audio conferencing bridge on the PSTN

It is possible to connect a conference on a Cisco TelePresence MCU to a conference on an audio bridge on the PSTN, by dialing out to the audio bridge via a Cisco TelePresence ISDN gateway. The steps below explain how to establish the call out from the Cisco TelePresence MCU to the audio bridge, and how to connect a telephone into the MCU conference so that the access codes and passwords for the audio bridge can be entered by DTMF from that telephone's keypad. Connecting a telephone is the most reliable way to ensure a source of in-band DTMF tones; almost all H.323 video endpoints send their DTMF tones as out-of-band H.245 user input indications, which do not get forwarded by the Cisco TelePresence MCU, and will therefore not be received by the audio bridge.

  1. On the ISDN GW, set up dial plan rules so that telephone calls can be made from the Cisco TelePresence MCU to the outside world (the PSTN).

    Note: The Call type for these rules must be Telephone. Call types Video using BONDING and Video using Nx64 will not work to telephones or audio conference bridges.
  2. Create your conference on the MCU.
  3. Dial out from your conference to a normal telephone (a land-line or a mobile telephone).
  4. In the conference participants list, click on the connection to your telephone and then on the Audio tab. Deselect Suppress in-band DTMF tones. Click Apply changes.
  5. Dial out from your conference to the audio bridge.
  6. Listen to the audio prompts coming from the bridge. Enter your required access codes and passwords by DTMF, using the keypad of your telephone.

The Cisco TelePresence MCU forwards your DTMF key strokes on to the audio bridge as in-band audio and you are able to navigate the audio bridge’s menus just as you would from a normal telephone.

DTMF and Lync/OCS 2007 R1 and R2

If you are running Cisco TelePresence MCU software version 2.2 or earlier, DTMF tones from Lync/OCS 2007 will not work. Cisco TelePresence MCU software versions 2.3 and later all support DTMF over RFC 2833, therefore DTMF tones from Lync/OCS 2007 will work.

Note: Cisco TelePresence MCU software version 2.2 can receive DTMF tones from LCS 2005.

Troubleshooting DTMF problems

Some endpoints send DTMF tones in-band and they are forwarded by the Cisco TelePresence MCU as part of the normal audio mix, but others send DTMF tones out-of-band as H.245 user input indications. The MCU does not forward these. Make sure that you are using an endpoint that is capable of sending DTMF tones in-band.
