Cisco IOS XR Software running on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router provides the following features and benefits:
-
IP and Routing—This supports a wide range of IPv4 and IPv6 services and routing protocols such as Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Routing Information Protocol (RIPv2), Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), IP Multicast, Routing Policy Language (RPL), Segment Routing, Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), and Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) features.
-
Ethernet Services—The following Ethernet features are supported:
-
Ethernet Virtual Connections (EVCs)
-
Flexible VLAN classification
-
Flexible VLAN translation
-
IEEE bridging
-
IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree (MST)
-
MST Access Gateway
-
L2VPN
-
Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS), Hierarchical VPLS (H-VPLS), Virtual Private Wire Service (VPWS), Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS), pseudo wire redundancy, and multi segment pseudo wire stitching.
-
-
BGP Prefix Independent Convergence—This provides the ability to converge BGP routes within sub seconds instead of multiple seconds. The Forwarding Information Base (FIB) is updated, independent of a prefix, to converge multiple 100K BGP routes with the occurrence of a single failure. This convergence is applicable to both core and edge failures and with or without MPLS. This fast convergence innovation is unique to Cisco IOS XR Software.
-
Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)—This supports MPLS protocols, including Traffic Engineering (TE) [including TE-FRR and TE Preferred Path], Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP), Label Distribution Protocol (LDP), Targeted LDP (T-LDP), Differentiated Services (DiffServ)-aware traffic engineering, and Layer 3 Virtual Private Network (L3VPN).
-
Multicast—This provides comprehensive IP Multicast software including Source Specific Multicast (SSM) and Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) in Sparse Mode only. The Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router also supports Auto-Rendezvous Point (AutoRP), Multiprotocol BGP (MBGP), Multicast Source Discovery Protocol (MSDP), Internet Group Management Protocol Versions 2 and 3 (IGMPv2 and v3), IGMPv2 and v3 snooping, Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) versions 1 and 2, and MLD snooping versions 1 and 2.
-
Quality of Service (QOS)—This supports QoS mechanisms including policing, marking, queuing, random and hard traffic dropping, and shaping. Additionally, Cisco IOS XR supports modular QoS command-line interface (MQC). MQC is used to configure various QoS features on various Cisco platforms, including the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router. Supports the following:
-
Class-Based Weighted Fair Queuing (CBWFQ)
-
Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED)
-
Priority Queuing with propagation
-
2-rate 3-color (2R3C) Policing
-
Modular QoS CLI (MQC)
-
4-level Hierarchical-QoS
-
Shared Policy Instances
-
-
Manageability—This provides industry-standard management interfaces including modular command-line interface (CLI), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), and native Extensible Markup Language (XML) interfaces. Includes a comprehensive set of Syslog messages.
-
Security—This provides comprehensive network security features including Layer 2 and Layer 3 access control lists (ACLs); routing authentications; Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA)/Terminal Access Controller Access Control System (TACACS+), Secure Shell (SSH), Management Plane Protection (MPP) for management plane security, and Simple Network Management Protocol version3 (SNMPv3). Control plane protections integrated into line card Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) include Generalized TTL Security Mechanism (GTSM), RFC 3682, and Dynamic Control Plane Protection (DCPP).
-
Availability—This supports rich availability features such as fault containment, fault tolerance, fast switchover, link aggregation, nonstop routing for ISIS, LDP, OSPF, and nonstop forwarding (NSF).
-
Enhanced core competencies:
-
IP fast convergence with Fast Reroute (FRR) support for Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS)
-
IP fast convergence with Fast Reroute (FRR) support for Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)

Note that error messages may display if features run without the appropriate licenses installed. For example, when creating or configuring VRF, if the A9K-IVRF-LIC license is not installed before creating a VRF, the following message displays:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router#LC/0/0/CPU0:Dec 15 17:57:53.653 : rsi_agent[247]:
%LICENSE-ASR9K_LICENSE-2-INFRA_VRF_NEEDED : 5 VRF(s) are configured without license
A9K-iVRF-LIC in violation of the Software Right To Use Agreement. This feature may be
disabled by the system without the appropriate license. Contact Cisco to purchase the
license immediately to avoid potential service interruption.
For Cisco license support, please contact your Cisco Sales Representative or Customer Service at 800- 553-NETS (6387) or 408-526-4000. For questions on the program other than ordering, please send e-mail to: cwm-license@cisco.com.
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregration Services Router Right-To-Use (RTU) Licensing

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/asr9000/hardware/Prodlicense/A9k-AIP-LIC-E.html
![]() Note |
Layer 3 VPNs are only to be used after you have purchased a license. Cisco will enforce the RTU of L3VPNs in follow on releases. You should contact Cisco, or check the release notes for the follow on release before upgrading for directions on how to install the license as part of the upgrade - otherwise the L3VPN feature may be affected. |
The activation of VRF capability still requires the use of the appropriate per line card license (A9K-IVRF-LIC / A9K-AIP-LIC-B / A9K-AIP-LIC-E). Please contact your sales representative for more details.
Firmware Support
To check the firmware code running on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router, run the show fpd package command in admin mode.
If upgrading from Release 3.7.3 or earlier releases, you may be expected to do a one-time FPD upgrade for any firmware images that may have changed since the last release. Refer to the documents at http://www.cisco.com/web/Cisco_IOS_XR_Software/index.html for upgrade instructions.

Software Features Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 5.3.1
Segment Routing
BFD over Bundles CISCO/IETF Mode Support on a Per Bundle Basis
![]() Note |
The global-level command available in previous releases to configure CISCO/IETF BoB over bundles is deprecated from release 5.3.1 onwards. In order to ensure a smooth upgrade, Cisco recommends that you configure the bundle at the interface level. |
For more information on BFD over Bundle Mode see the Implementing BFD chapter in the Routing Configuration Guide for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers. For more information on BFD over Bundle Mode commands, see the BFD Commands chapter in the Routing Command Reference for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.
L3VPN iBGP PE-CE
The L3VPN iBGP PE-CE feature helps establish an iBGP (internal Border Gateway Protocol) session between the provider edge (PE) and customer edge (CE) devices to exchange BGP routing information. A BGP session between two BGP peers is said to be an iBGP session if the BGP peers are in the same autonomous systems.
For more information on L3VPN iBGP PE-CE, see the Implementing BGP chapter in the Routing Configuration Guide for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers. For more information on L3VPN iBGP PE-CE commands, see the BGP Commands chapter in the Routing Command Reference for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.
Source and destination-based flow tag
The source-based flow tag feature allows you to match packets based on the flow-tag assigned to the source address of the incoming packets. Once matched, you can then apply any supported PBR action on this policy.
For more information on Source and destination-based flow tag, see the Implementing BGP chapter in the Routing Configuration Guide for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers. For more information on source-based flow tag commands, see the BGP Commands chapter in the Routing Command Reference for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.
BGP Maximum Prefix - Discard Extra Paths
The discard extra paths feature discards all the excess paths received from the neighbor when the paths exceed the configured maximum value.
CFM Performance Monitoring on Satellite
Performance Monitoring (PM) for Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) on nV Satellite system has been improved by processing the CFM PM frames on the satellite instead of the ASR9K host. Prior to this release, MEPs configured on Satellite Access ports processed (time-stamped) performance monitoring frames only at the ASR9K host.
For more information about CFM PM frame processing on the satellite, see the Configuring the Satellite Network Virtualization (nV) System chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router nV System Configuration Guide.
CFM on a multipoint-to-multipoint cross connect
Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) is supported over a multipoint-to-multipoint cross connect. For related content, see the service command in Interface and Hardware Component Command Reference for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.
RADIUS over IPv6
From Cisco IOS XR Software Release 5.3.1 and later, RADIUS over IPv6 is supported in BNG, thereby allowing IPv6 address also for various RADIUS configurations and CoA client configurations.
-
radius-server host (global configuration mode)
-
radius server (radius server group configuration mode)
-
radius server-private (radius server group configuration mode)
-
aaa server radius dynamic-author client (global configuration mode)
For more information about RADIUS over IPv6 feature, see the Configuring Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting Functions chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Broadband Network Gateway Configuration Guide. For complete command reference, see the BNG AAA Commands chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Broadband Network Gateway Command Reference.
BNG Geo Redundancy Enhancements
BNG geo redundancy support is enhanced with these features:
-
The backend policy and charging rule function (PCRF) system need to send the CoA message only to the master node; not to the slave node.
-
Once the session is up on the master node, the entire session information gets synced to the slave node. This includes dynamic synchronization of updates such as CoA or service logon.
IP in IP Tunneling
IP in IP tunneling refers to the encapsulation of an IP packet as a payload in another IP packet. ASR9K routers support IP in IP tunnels with all possible combinations of IPv4 and IPv6; that is, IPv4 over IPv4, IPv6 over IPv4, IPv4 over IPv6, and IPv6 over IPv6. For example, an IPv4 over IPv6 refers to an IPv4 packet as a payload encapsulated within an IPv6 packet and routed across an IPv6 network to reach the destination IPv4 network, where it is decapsulated.
VPLS LSM on A9K-SIP-700 Line Card
The A9K-SIP-700 Line Card on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router supports VPLS Label Switched Multicast (LSM). For this feature content, see the section VPLS LSM as a Solution in L2VPN and Ethernet Services Configuration Guide for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.
BGP RD value
For the BGP rd command in the L2VPN bridge domain VFI autodiscovery BGP and L2VPN cross-connect mp2mp autodiscovery BGP submodes, the index value associated with the IP address can take values higher than 32767 in the range from 0 to 65535. For details, see the rd command documentation in VPN and Ethernet Services Command Reference for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.
VXLAN Anycast Gateway
The VXLAN anycast gateway feature extends anycast functionality to VXLAN. It enables the use of anycast routing on a network for underlay multicast load-balancing and redundancy.
![]() Note |
The VXLAN anycast gateway feature is supported on only Cisco ASR 9000 High Density 100GE Ethernet line cards. |
Enhancements to PMIPv6 LMA
Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) configuration now supports the following commands on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers:
-
enforce heartbeat-to-mag enforces the values of heartbeat parameters on a Mobile Access Gateway (MAG)
-
redistribute home-address controls redistribution of Home Address (HoA) / Home Network prefix (HNP) routes into routing protocols
For more information, see the Proxy Mobile IPv6 Local Mobility Anchor Commands chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router IP Addresses and Services Command Reference .
Configuring CoS for Unicast DHCPv4 Control Packets on Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers
The inner and outer Class of Service (CoS) values for unicast DHCPv4 control packets can now be configured on Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers. The outer CoS value configured using the outer-cos command is also set as the inner CoS value. The inner-cos command cannot be used to directly set inner CoS value for unicast packets. In previous releases, the inner and outer CoS values could not be configured for unicast DHCPv4 packets. The inner-cos and outer-cos commands can still be used to configure CoS values for broadcast packets.
For more information about configuring the CoS values, see the BNG DHCP Commands chapter in Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Broadband Network Gateway Command Reference.
Smart Licensing for PMIPv6 LMA
Smart Licensing method of licensing has been enabled for Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers. The licensing mode is soft-enforced mode. The licensing string available is A9K-SESSION-128K with maximum supported scale of 128K LMA bindings.
For more information about Smart Licensing, see Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router System Management Configuration Guide. For more information about PMIPv6 LMA, see the Configuring Proxy Mobile IPv6 Local Mobility Anchor chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router IP Addresses and Services Configuration Guide.
IPv6 Virtual Management Interface on RSP
An IPv6 virtual address can now be configured to enable access to the router from a single virtual address with a management network, without the prior knowledge of which route processor (RP) is active. An IPv6 virtual address persists across RP failover situations. A new command ipv6 virtual address has been introduced to define an IPv6 virtual address for a network of management Ethernet interfaces.
For more information, see the Configuring IPv6 Addressing chapter in the IP Addresses and Services Configuration Guides. For more information about the new command, see the Network Stack IPv4 and IPv6 Commands chapter in the IP Addresses and Services Command References.
Policy-map Show Commit Diff Support
The difference between the currently running configuration and the target configuration (the configuration before the commit command) can be displayed using the show commit diff support command.
In Cisco IOS XR Release 5.3.1, the policy-map keyword is added to the show commit diff command. This keyword provides details about the policy-map implementation.
UDLD over Bundle ICL
Satellite access interface over bundle ICL supports Unidirectional Link Detection (UDLD) protocol.
IPv6 Ingress Classification on DSCP
IP DSCP is supported for IPv6.
For more information, see Supported Capability Matrix section in Configuring Modular QoS Service Packet Classification chapter in Modular Quality of Service Configuration Guide.

Predefined NAT
In classic NAT, the process of mapping a private IP to a public IP or a private port to an outside port is random. Therefore, it becomes difficult to track the subscribers using an IP and a port at a given time. Predefined NAT avoids this random process by mapping a private IP address to a range of ports associated with the corresponding public IP address. This is done through an algorithm that helps the user to recognize a private IP address without having to refer to the massive CGN logs. The address and port translation is done in accordance with the algorithm.
For more information on Predefined NAT, see the Carrier Grade IPv6 over Virtualized Services Module (VSM) chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router CGv6 Configuration Guide, Release 5.3.x. For more information on Predefined NAT commands, see the Carrier Grade NAT Commands on Cisco IOS XR Software chapter in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router CGv6 Command Reference, Release 5.3.x.
Netconf-yang updates
Support is extended to new Yang models. Refer the System Security Configuration Guide for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers for a list of the Yang models and their descriptions.
In case of a DoS (Denial of Service) attack on Netconf, wherein, Netconf receives numerous requests in a short span of time, the router may become irresponsive if Netconf consumes most of the bandwidth or CPU processing time. This can be prevented, by limiting the traffic directed at the Netconf agent. This is achieved using the netconf-yang agent rate-limit and netconf-yang agent session commands.
The relevant commands are discussed in detail, in the System Security Command Reference for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers .
Dynamic Flow Based Label Support for BGP Signalled Pseudowires
Flow aware label capacity can be dynamically learnt through BGP signalling. The static keyword is optional for the load-balancing flow-label command in the L2VPN bridge group bridge-domain vfi auto-discovery bgp signaling-protocol submode. For details, see the load-balancing flow-label command in VPN and Ethernet Services Command Reference for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Routers.

Hardware Features Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 5.3.1
-
4-Port 100-Gigabit Ethernet Line Card with CPAK: Provides four CPAK cages for CPAK modules that operate at a rate of 100 Gbps. The line card is available in -SE (Service Edge Optimized) and -TR (Packet Transport Optimized) variants. The two variants are functionally equivalent, but vary in configuration scale and buffer capacity.
-
8 -Port 100-Gigabit Ethernet Line Card with CPAK: Provides eight CPAK cages for CPAK modules that operate at a rate of 100 Gbps. The OTN version line card is available in either -SE (Service Edge Optimized) or -TR (Packet Transport Optimized) variants. The two variants are functionally equivalent, but vary in configuration scale and buffer capacity. The line card LAN version is available in -SE only.
-
40 GE breakout support for CPAK: Support for 2x40GE is introduced. A CPAK optical module can either be configured as a fixed 1x100GE port, 2x40GE ports, or 10x10GE ports by using a fiber-optic breakout cable.

-
Serial Interfaces Out of Order in show ipv4 interface brief or show ipv6 interface briefcommand—The show ip interface brief command might display interfaces out of order if different types of serialization are used on the SPA cards.
The serial interfaces are displayed in the show ip interface brief command output in the order shown in the example below:
The ordering is based on:
-
Slot
-
SPA
-
Type
-
T3
-
T3/T1
-
vt15-T1
-
multilink
This may be confusing (the interfaces appear out of order) for the user who is accustomed to IOS.
Example output:
With multiple cards:

Resolving Upgrade File Issues
![]() Note |
In some very rare cases inconsistencies in the content of the internal configuration files can appear. In such situations, to avoid configuration loss during upgrade, the following steps can be optionally done before activating packages: |
-
Clear the NVGEN cache:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# run nvgen -F 1
-
Create a dummy config commit:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# config RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router(config)# hostname <hostname> RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:rotuer(config)# commit RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router(config)# end
-
Force a commit update by using the reload command. Press n when the confirmation prompt appears:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# reload Updating Commit Database. Please wait...[OK] Proceed with reload? [confirm]
-
Press n
In some cases other activity may preclude a reload. The following message may display:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# reload Preparing system for backup. This may take a few minutes ............System configuration backup in progress [Retry later]
If you receive this message wait and then retry the command after some time.
