CSCve91873 | Cache Offload Failure on 2208 based ASIC due to un-programmed SuperCap VPD |
In a quality audit, Cisco identified an issue with 2208-based ASIC Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) Controllers. The SuperCap might have left manufacturing with an unprogrammed Vital Product Data (VPD). An unprogrammed VPD could cause the firmware to misinterpret the VPD as a different type of SuperCap, which could potentially result in data integrity issues due to an offload cache failure. Ultimately, this could lead to data loss.
The VPD includes information about the SuperCap such as manufacturing part number, serial number, and date of manufacture. This problem occurred on SuperCaps produced between April 1, 2016 through April 15, 2017.
The affected RAID Controllers could be any of these: 926x, 927x, and 928x which are all based off of the 2208 ASIC. 12G SAS and 93xx RAID Controllers are NOT affected. Less than 1% of units are affected.
An unprogrammed VPD could cause the firmware to misinterpret the VPD as a different type of SuperCap. This might cause the SuperCap to have insufficient charge in order to complete data offload. This could potentially result in data integrity issues due to an offload cache failure.
Units which might be impacted by this issue should be upgraded to run software as follows:
See the "How To Identify Affected Products" section for details on how to identify impacted units.
In order to identify if a unit is impacted by this issue, locate the serial number for the RAID card from the log files. Enter the serial number in the FN64335 Serial Number Validation Tool.
