With IOS release 12.0(31)S, 31S1 or 31S1a loaded on a Cisco 12000 PRP or GRP-B route processors the router may crash when:
SFP state is changed in a SPA based line cards and there are COS stats messages being sent to the PRP from other Engine 4/4+ or 6 line cards at the same time.
When a combination of Engine5 and Engine 4/4+/6 line cards are installed into the Cisco 12000 router and there is a line card reload, route processor switchover or route processor reload.
There are two root causes for this problem.
SFP state change notification processing by the route processor is blocking all other IPC message processing.
The active route processor is getting too many COS stats messages from Engine 4/4+/6 line cards.
A software fix for this problem has been integrated into IOS releases 12.0(31)S2 and later. This fix changes the way RPs handle SFP state change processing and aggregates COS stats in Engine 4/4+/6 line cards at 10 second intervals.
Symptoms include:
Active PRP or GRP-B resets in a dual RP Cisco 12000 router.
OR - In a Cisco 12000 router without dual route processors the router crashes.
There is no software configuration work around for this problem.
To avoid and fix this problem, the IOS must be upgraded to release 12.0(31)S2 or later.
