High-Frequency Compute Engine

The Cisco UCS M1414 Compute Cartridge is a single-socket server using Intel Xeon E3 1200 v3 or Intel Xeon E3 1200 v4 CPUs with up to 64 GB of memory. The high-frequency CPUs used in the M1414 M-Series cartridge are ideal for electronic-design automation (EDA), seismic research, Cisco DNA sequencing, and video transcoding.

Features and Capabilities

The M1414 Compute Cartridge is part of a growing line of computing options for the Cisco UCS M4308 Modular Chassis, bringing high-frequency CPUs to a high-density, scale-out deployment model. It is part of the Cisco composable infrastructure portfolio.

The unique design of the M4308 chassis abstracts server subsystems to efficiently provide power, cooling, I/O, and local storage resources to dense M-Series cartridges. With this groundbreaking design, the M-Series provides a dense and power-efficient platform designed to increase computing capacity per rack unit (RU). It provides optimal:

  • Performance per watt
  • Computing capacity per RU

This design allows Cisco to abstract server subsystems completely into the infrastructure and completely off the computing nodes. The disaggregated subcomponents are:

  • Power
  • Cooling
  • I/O
  • Disk drives
  • Management

With the separation of components between the M1414 Compute Cartridge and the M4308 Modular Chassis, we can decouple the lifecycles of the subsystems. Now, every subcomponent can be refreshed independently, on its own lifecycle schedule, without provoking a major platform refresh.

The M-Series design also allows for smaller increments of scale, so your applications gain the number of computing nodes they require to achieve the desired performance and availability. No more overprovisioning. No more wasted resources. Everything is under a single management tool for easy scale and management transparency.

The Cisco UCS M-Series Modular Server system features a 2-RU chassis built on the innovative foundation of Cisco Virtual Interface Card (VIC) technology. The chassis can hold up to eight completely independent M1414 cartridges. All M4308 chassis connect to a pair of Cisco UCS Fabric Interconnects with Cisco UCS Manager, so you gain easy, fast scalability with industry-leading Cisco UCS management.
