The Cisco® Bandwidth and Management Suite for Transport Software Defined Networking (SDN) enables intent-based network operations and lifecycle management for service providers to monitor, operate, compute, and optimize bandwidth, state changes, and service activation. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technology is an approach to network management that enables dynamic, programmatically efficient network configuration in order to improve network performance and monitoring making it more like cloud computing than traditional network management.

Product overview

Leveraging key elements of Cisco’s automation portfolio, the Bandwidth and Management Suite (BAM) provides cost-effective, multivendor, network optimization, management, and provisioning services. The suite includes the WAN Automation Engine (WAE), Evolved Programmable Network Manager (EPN-M), Segment Routing Path Computation Engine (SR-PCE), and Network Services Orchestrator (NSO) applications.

Providing full lifecycle management to design, deploy, monitor, and optimize your network infrastructure, the Bandwidth and Management Suite offers a “better together” solution.

Transport SDN workflow support offers optimization of network bandwidth to improve network reliability and ongoing performance. This includes monitoring services and activation of new services in case of network congestion. WAN SDN deployments are driven by enterprise connectivity cost reduction, increased Quality of Service (QoS), and decreased time to market. Service providers need to maximize cost control by increasing automation and capacity utilization.

Service providers need end-to-end control and management solutions. The Bandwidth and Management Suite provides a complete solution for Orchestrated Network Optimization, Closed-Loop Network Optimization, and Bandwidth on Demand workflow fulfillment.

Intent-based network operations lifecycle

Leveraging industry-leading applications, the Bandwidth and Management Suite provides full lifecycle management. Providing intent-based network operations application support for design, deployment, monitoring, and network optimization, the suite provides a scalable, flexible, and programmable solution for network management.

Optimize your network design: Traffic requirements continue to grow rapidly and WAN costs continue to rise with traffic growth in part because of suboptimal network utilization efficiency.

The Bandwidth and Management Suite automatically provisions, monitors, and optimizes multivendor, multidomain transport networks faster and cheaper by leveraging the following components.

Cisco Network Services Orchestrator (NSO) is a proven, sophisticated, open-network automation platform in production at the top 10 service providers and a growing number of large enterprises. It can serve as a key part of your automation strategy by providing a robust bridge between your automation tooling and your physical and virtual infrastructure. NSO provides a rich set of northbound software interfaces and APIs to integrate into upper-layer tooling. NSO is also intrinsically multivendor and works cross-domain to present a single view of all your virtual and physical infrastructure.

Cisco WAN Automation Engine (WAE) is a powerful, flexible platform that enables service providers to build abstracted network models that provide insights to better run their network.

Cisco Segment Routing Path Compute Engine (SR-PCE) is a Segment Routing Traffic Engineering (SR-TE) framework that is based on IOS XR. This product has been built to work in sync with Segment Routing (SR), which is gaining traction as the controller-friendly routing protocol of choice in the service provider. SR-PCE offers horizontal network “automation” for use cases such as disjoint paths, low latency slicing, and affinity-based Constrained Shortest Path First (CSPF) via On-Demand Next Hop (ODN), coupled with Automated Steering at the network level.

Cisco Evolved Programmable Network Manager (EPN-M) provides converged element and network management of Carrier Ethernet, Layer 3 MPLS VPN, optical transport, and circuit emulation over packet networks. For example, addressing the combination of Time-Division Multiplex (TDM) to IP, Optical Transport Network (OTN), and DWDM/ROADM networks provides comprehensive network management support as service providers modernize circuit transport and private line networks.
