SAN JOSE, Calif. – On November 1, 2017, Cisco completed the acquisition of Perspica, Inc. headquartered in San Jose, CA. Perspica provides machine learning and data processing technology and expertise, which will support and accelerate the AppDynamics vision.

With the addition of Perspica to AppDynamics capabilities, customers will be able to further leverage machine learning capabilities to analyze large amounts of application-related data, in real-time and with business context, including when an application is deployed in a company’s public, private and multiple cloud environments. Together, AppDynamics and Perspica can provide enterprises with a way to filter crucial signals from the noise and drive their growth based on the digital streaming insights of their businesses. They will do this through:

  • Collaboration with Perspica’s engineering talent who specialize in data science and highly scalable data platforms;
  • Stream-based processing that can derive inferences from data and find anomalies without needing to wait until data is stored, which will enable our customers to accelerate their paths to business-driving insights; and
  • Domain-specific machine learning that will strengthen our root cause analysis capabilities and core APM solution by allowing our agents to massively increase the amount of data points we can ingest.

The Perspica team will be joining the Cisco AppDynamics business unit led by SVP/GM David Wadhwani within the Applications Group led by Rowan Trollope.

Q: What has Cisco acquired?

A: Cisco has completed the acquisition of Perspica, Inc., a privately-held company based in San Jose, CA. Perspica provides machine learning and data processing technology and expertise, which will support and accelerate the AppDynamics’ vision.

Q: Can you explain Perspica’s offering?

A: Perspica helps companies improve their IT operations with machine learning and analytics on streaming machine data.

Q: Why did Cisco choose to acquire Perspica?

A: Cisco chose to acquire Perspica to further AppDynamics’ leading capabilities in application intelligence through:

  • Collaboration with Perspica’ brilliant engineering talent who specialize in data science and highly scalable data platforms. Our teams will work side by side to transform enterprises’ complex systems into their biggest competitive advantages;
  • Stream-based processing that can derive inferences from data and find anomalies without needing to wait until data is stored, which will enable our customers to accelerate their paths to business-driving insights; and
  • Domain-specific machine learning that will strengthen our root cause analysis capabilities and core APM solution by allowing our agents to greatly increase the amount of data points we can ingest.

Q: Why is now the right time to acquire Perspica?

A: Enterprises are writing and deploying their own software faster and more broadly now than ever before, such as the proliferation of public, private and multiple cloud environments and modern architectures. However, given the distributed nature of these new systems, driving performance across the entire surface area requires a new approach. We started on that path when we acquired AppDynamics, a leader in application intelligence earlier this year. And, now we are extending that journey with our intent to acquire Perspica, a provider of machine learning and data processing technology and expertise.

As any data scientist or researcher will tell you, machine learning is all about the data. And, it’s one dimensional without the business context. In our experience working with the world’s largest companies, machine learning is only as good as the data it ingests; only as relevant as the data’s timeliness; and, only as valuable as the data’s business context.

Leveraging machine learning capabilities to analyze this data in real-time can unlock new value for our customers. With AppDynamics and Perspica, we will be able to analyze data from across a company’s public, private and multiple cloud environments and process it in the stream in real-time with business context.
