Creating ARP Tables
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is the method for finding a host's Link Layer (MAC) address when only its IP address is known. The ARP table is used to maintain a correlation between each MAC address and its corresponding IP address. The ARP table can be manually entered by the user. User entries are not aged out.
This page enables viewing dynamic ARP entries that the device has learned, changing the ARP entry aging time, clearing ARP entries, and adding/deleting static ARP entries.
To define the ARP tables:
Click IP Configuration > ARP Table. The ARP Table Page opens the following page.
This page contains the following fields.
- ARP Entry Age Out Enter the number of seconds that entries can remain in the ARP table. After this period, the entry is deleted from the table. You cannot enter a zero value but you can change a dynamic entry to a static one.
- Clear ARP Table Entries Select the type of ARP entries to be cleared on all devices. The possible values are:
Adding an ARP Entry
Click Add in the ARP Table Page. The Add ARP Entry Page opens.
This page contains the following fields:
- IP Version Displays the IP address format supported by the host. Only IPv4 is supported.
- Interface For devices in Layer 2 mode, you can only add ARP table entries for VLANs. For devices in Layer 3 mode, select whether the ARP entry is for a port, VLAN or LAG.
- IP Address Enter the station IP address, associated with the MAC address entered below.
- MAC Address Enter the station MAC address, associated in the ARP table with the IP address entered above.
Modifying an ARP Entry
Click IP Configuration > ARP Table. The Edit ARP Entry Page opens.
Select an interface and click Edit. The Edit ARP Entry Page opens.
Select an interface in the ARP Table Page and click Edit. The Edit ARP Entry Page opens.
This page contains the following fields:
- Interface Select whether this entry is for a port, VLAN or LAG. For devices in Layer 2 mode, only VLANs are supported.
- IP Address Indicates the station IP address, which is associated with the MAC address entered below.
- MAC Address Indicates the station MAC address, which is associated in the ARP table with the IP address.
