OpenFlow and onePK
With the exponential growth in network traffic, IT needs a way to give applications direct control over the underlying network infrastructure.
We've addressed this need by introducing programmability functions and a controller/forwarding plane architecture as part of the Cisco Open Network Environment (ONE) architecture. The Cisco eXtensible Network Controller (XNC) is a Java application that operates on any Linux-based x86 server, such as those in the Cisco Unified Computing System.
The Cisco XNC supports multiple southbound protocols. The first version supports both OpenFlow and Cisco ONE Platform Kit (onePK). By adding the Cisco XNC to a network, network operators can create powerful, reusable network service abstractions for business applications through northbound APIs. They can also automate specific network behavior changes in the applications using a single management pane.
