Cisco provides image authentication with its various IP phone protocols. Image authentication allows the phone to detect if the image has been tampered with before it is programmed into the phone. If the image fails the authentication process then the phone will reject the image. Image authentication occurs through signed files. All Cisco 7940 and 7960 IP Phone loads 5.0 and newer are signed and can only be upgraded or downgraded to other signed releases.
The P0030801SR02 firmware uses signed (authenticated) files. This step improves IP phone security on the Cisco Unified IP Phone models 7940 and 7960.
Note: For the Cisco Unified IP Phone models 7940 and 7960, you should not add the extension of .sbn or .bin to the firmware version name in the Cisco Unified Communication Manager database.
You cannot upgrade to firmware release 8.1(2)SR2 directly from
firmware release 8.0(5) or an earlier release. You upgrade to
firmware release 8.1(1) first, then upgrade from release 8.1(1)
to release 8.1(2)SR2.
If you are using the Cisco Unified IP Phone Expansion Module 7914 , you must upgrade the Expansion Module to firmware release S00105000400 before you install the 8.1(2)SR2 Cisco Unified IP Phone 7960/7940 phone load. The installation program is named cmterm-7914-sccp.5-0-4.exe (or cmterm-7914-sccp.5-0-4.cop.sgn for Cisco Unified Communication Manager Release 5.0 and later), and is available on CCO in the same location as the installer for the 8.1(2)SR2 software.

Please note that different versions of the installer are needed for different Cisco Unified Communication Manager releases. Cisco Unified Communication Manager releases earlier than 5.0 are based on a windows server platform. Cisco Unified Communication Manager release 5.0 and later are based on a Linux server platform.
For Cisco Unified Communication Manager 5.0 and later, you must do all software installations and upgrades by using the Software Upgrades menu options. The system can upload and process only software that Cisco Systems approved. You cannot install or use third-party or Windows-based software applications that you may have been using with a previous version of Cisco Unified Communication Manager with Cisco Unified CallManager 5.0 and later.
The Cisco Unified IP Phone Model 7940/7960 Firmware version 8.1(2)SR2 is also supplied in a zip file, as an alternative in case a Cisco Unified Communication Manager is not available to run the executable installer program. The name of this file is cmterm-7940-7960-sccp.8-1-2SR2.zip.
After unzipping the firmware files, they should be manually copied to the appropriate directory on the TFTP server.
