From the Editor:

Hello,

This month's newsletter covers updates to several tools available at the Cisco TAC Web Site. Check out the first "What's Hot" article in particular, about enhancements to the Cisco TAC Case Collection tool, formerly known as the Cisco Troubleshooting Assistant. Cisco TAC engineers recently rebuilt four key knowledge bases within this tool to give you easy access to problem-solution information from common cases opened with the TAC.

Almost all the technical support tools at the Cisco TAC Web Site require you to log in with your Cisco.com user ID and password. If you don't have an account yet, you can register at:

www.cisco.com/tac/newsletter/0403_cisco_register.html

Here are the articles you'll find in this issue of the Cisco TAC Newsletter:

  • Major enhancements to the Cisco TAC Case Collection tool
  • New TAC-specific support in the Cisco.com "Search" field
  • April's schedule of Cisco TAC Web Seminars
  • New events at the Networking Professionals Connection
  • A new CCIE exam focusing on voice technology

Please feel free to send this newsletter to anyone you know who might find this information useful. And, if you have any questions or comments about this newsletter, you can e-mail me at tacnews-feedback@cisco.com.

What's Hot

Cisco TAC Case Collection Tool - NEW:
New Name, Updated Content, and Enhanced Functionality

The interactive Cisco TAC Case Collection tool, formerly known as the Cisco Troubleshooting Assistant, helps you quickly find solutions to common issues with Cisco products and technologies, based on symptoms you describe. Using information from recent TAC cases, Cisco TAC engineers have rebuilt the following four technology sections, or "knowledge bases," within this tool:

  • Network Security
  • LAN Switching
  • Dial (Access)
  • Wireless (Note: The Wireless knowledge base replaces the Cisco Wireless Troubleshooting Center, so you might want to update your bookmarks.)

These knowledge bases contain diagnostic information for hundreds of situations. What's more, they will help you quickly find the answers you need by prompting you only for information relevant to your issue, rather than making you answer every question in a static decision tree.

We plan to publish more knowledge bases in the coming months, so stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, give the enhanced knowledge bases a try:

www.cisco.com/tac/newsletter/0403_tsa.html
(available to registered users only)

Due to the dynamic nature of the content in the new Cisco TAC Case Collection, you should access the tool with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, Netscape 6.0, or higher.

Cisco.com "Search" Field - UPDATE:
Site-Wide "Search" Field Provides Direct Access to Selected TAC Tools

You can now use the "Search" field in the upper-right corner of all Cisco.com pages to access four TAC tools: the Cisco Error Message Decoder, the Cisco SNMP Object Navigator, the Cisco Bug Toolkit, and the Cisco TAC Case Query tool.

Use the "Search" field on any page by entering:

  • A console error message -- your results will include a link to the Error Message Decoder's analysis of the message. You need to be logged in to Cisco.com to see these search results.
  • An SNMP ID, SNMP name, or MIB name -- your results will include a link to the appropriate information in the SNMP Object Navigator. You need to be logged in to Cisco.com to see these search results.
  • A bug ID -- your results will include a link to that bug in the Bug Toolkit. You'll find this link above the regular search results, in a section called "Best Bets." After you click this link, you'll need to log in with your Cisco.com user ID and password to access the tool page.
  • A TAC case number -- your results will include a link to that case in the TAC Case Query tool. You'll find this link above the regular search results, in a section called "Best Bets." After you click this link, you'll need to log in with your Cisco.com user ID and password to access the tool page.

For more information on these search enhancements, please visit:

CCIE Voice Certification - NEW:
New Exam Lets You Demonstrate Expertise with Voice over IP

If you deploy or support voice-over-IP networks, or if you want to in the future, start studying today for the new CCIE Voice exam. This new certification is an excellent way to demonstrate your technical expertise and to prepare yourself to meet the growing demand for voice communications over IP.

As with any other CCIE track, you'll need to pass both written and lab exams to earn your CCIE Voice certification. You can sign up now to take the Beta version of the written exam between March 17 and April 7 for only US$50 (a US$250 savings). After you get a passing grade on the written test, you can sign up for the lab exam. Lab exams should be available in late summer 2003.

For recommended reading, suggested training, and more information about the CCIE Voice exam, visit the CCIE What's New page:
