From the Editor:

First, thank you to everyone who sent feedback about the redesigned Cisco TAC Web Site last month. We saw many lively comments about the new interface, some in favor and some opposed. I forwarded all your comments to our developers, who will address them individually.

We have lots to cover in this issue of the Cisco TAC Newsletter. In the "What's Hot" section, you can read about:

  • New network security and LAN technical support documents
  • Updates to the Cisco Wireless LAN Software Center
  • The new Cisco DSP Calculator for Cisco 1700 Series routers
  • Three enhancements to the Cisco SNMP Object Navigator
  • The Cisco Output Interpreter's support of the "show stack" command
And the "Online Technical Training Opportunities" section includes:
  • December's schedule of Cisco TAC Web Seminars
  • TechTalks and "Ask the Expert" events at the Networking Professionals Connection
Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you know who might find these updates useful. Also, do you have any comments about this newsletter? Topics we should add? Topics we should remove? Tell me what's on your mind: tacnews-feedback@cisco.com.

What's Hot

Cisco Network Security Technical Support Documents - UPDATE:
New and Updated Documents Cover Configuration Issues

Recent additions and updates to the Cisco TAC Web Site's network security documents offer configuration help for IP Security (IPSec), virtual private networks (VPNs), and Cisco PIX® Firewall issues:

Cisco LAN Technical Support Documents - UDPATE:
Updated Documents Focus on Troubleshooting Hardware and Connectivity

The Cisco LAN troubleshooting resources on the Cisco TAC Web Site now include five updated documents, covering hardware issues and workstation connectivity:

Cisco Wireless LAN Software Center - UPDATE:
New Software Resources Make Finding the Right Version Simple

At the Cisco Wireless LAN Software Center, you now have two options for downloading software: the new Cisco Aironet® Wireless Software Selector, and the updated Cisco Aironet Wireless Software Display Tables.

  • The Cisco Aironet Wireless Software Selector guides you through the process of choosing a software version. By only displaying versions that match the criteria you select, this tool takes the guesswork out of choosing software.
  • The Cisco Aironet Wireless Software Display Tables show all the software releases you can download, and you can sort the versions by product, model number, and operating system. When you know what you're looking for and want to see all your software options, use these display tables.

Try the Cisco Wireless LAN Software Center today to find the software you need:

Cisco DSP Calculator Tool - NEW:
New Tool Calculates DSP Requirements for Cisco 1700 Series Routers

The new Cisco DSP Calculator can help you figure out the digital signal processor (DSP) requirements for voice configurations on Cisco 1700 Series routers running Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(8)YN or later.

Just enter your Cisco 1700 Series model number, voice interface cards, and the number of voice channels you want to configure. The DSP Calculator will tell you how many DSP modules you will need, the part numbers of DSPs available for purchase, and the commands to configure on your router.

Let the DSP Calculator guide you when configuring voice services on the Cisco 1700 Series:

Cisco SNMP Object Navigator Tool - UPDATE:
Enhancements Provide Faster, Easier MIB Management

The Cisco SNMP Object Navigator tool helps you find and download Management Information Bases (MIBs) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) objects. With three recent enhancements, the tool gives you MIB information faster and more easily than before.

The SNMP Object Navigator now:

  1. Lists dependent MIBs and the order to compile them in for a given MIB, so you know exactly what you need to download and compile.

  2. Lets you define how many hierarchy levels to view above an object. This way, you can go straight to the information you need without waiting for the entire hierarchy to load -- and without scrolling through unnecessary pages of the MIB tree.

  3. Formats MIB files with links to details about each SNMP object, and visually sets comments apart from the SNMP code.

Visit the SNMP Object Navigator today to see these improvements yourself:

Cisco Output Interpreter and Cisco Stack Decoder - UPDATE:
Output Interpreter Will Replace Stack Decoder on December 6

The Cisco Output Interpreter tool provides an instant, online analysis of the "show stack" command -- the same analysis you would receive from the Cisco Stack Decoder tool. Because both tools now do the same thing, we plan to remove the Stack Decoder from the Cisco TAC Web Site on December 6, 2002.

In addition to "show stack," the Output Interpreter can also analyze the output from 99 other "show" commands. This analysis will point out possible problems with your Cisco device, and suggest potential fixes.

Next time you have pages of output to decipher, have the Output Interpreter do the reading for you:
