NMS Best Practices White Paper - NEW:
Cisco Network Management Systems Initiatives Align with ISO Best Practices

The Network Management System (NMS) Best Practices Web site features a new white paper that provides recommendations to increase the overall effectiveness of current management and future implementation of network management tools and technologies. The paper addresses the five functional areas defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) network management model:

  • Fault Management - Detect, isolate, notify users of, and correct faults encountered in the network
  • Configuration Management - Track network and system configuration information of various versions of hardware and software elements
  • Performance Management - Maintain overall network performance at an acceptable level with performance metrics
  • Security Management - Control access to network resources according to local guidelines
  • Accounting Management - Maintain usage information of network resources for proper accounting or chargeback

The NMS Best Practices White Paper is intended primarily for enterprise customers who are considering implementation of a network management system.

Cisco Output Interpreter Tool - ENHANCED:
PIX and BGP Analysis Capabilities Extended

The Cisco Output Interpreter tool now checks PIX® configurations for common IP Security virtual private network (IPSec VPN) issues, via the write term command. Checks include ensuring that crypto access lists are covered by the appropriate nat 0 access lists and that all crypto maps are applied to an interface.

The Cisco Output Interpreter can also help you gain a better understanding of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). The tool analyzes the output of many forms of the show ip bgp command, including:

  • show ip bgp to analyze the current BGP table and identify potential issues
  • show ip bgp x.x.x.x to determine why specific paths have been chosen and identify potential errors
  • show ip bgp peer-group to analyze peer group settings and detect inconsistencies
  • show ip bgp summary to evaluate relationships with BGP peers and determine peers' states

For instant PIX and BGP output analysis and suggestions for problem resolution, please find the Cisco Output Interpreter tool at:

Updated resources address blocked console access, Cisco IOS® upgrades, and cable modem commands.

New "Cable Top Issues" resources include the following:

  • Configuring Cable Modulation Profiles on Cisco's Cable Modem Termination Systems - This document explains the configuration commands (which change the modulation profile) and the show commands (which verify the parameters that have been configured).
  • SNMP FAQ for Cable Networks - This FAQ contains some of the common issues regarding Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) in cable environments, including Management Information Bases (MIBs), specific object IDs (OIDs), remote-query command, SNMP filtering through the Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) config file, SNMP community strings, and methods of polling MIBs.
  • Cisco Cable Voice Adapters (CVA120) Basic Installation and Troubleshooting - This document illustrates basic CVA120 setup in a lab environment, and explores troubleshooting options to remedy the CVA failing to go online.

Updated "Cable Top Issues" resources are:

  • Why Is Console Access to My Cable Modem Disabled? - This document discusses the reason why console or telnet access to an online cable modem can become disabled.
  • Cisco IOS Software Upgrade for Cable Modem and Cable Modem Termination System - This document describes how to upgrade the Cisco IOS Software on cable modems and cable modem termination systems.
