VPN Technical Tips - UPDATED:
New VPN Tech Notes and Sample Configurations Pages

Two new Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN) pages address IP security (IPSec) and PIX® Firewall configurations. These pages provide answers to customer questions such as, "Which VPN client do I need to download?" and "How do I configure PIX Firewall 6.0 with my VPN client?"

The Tech Notes pages reveal which versions of Cisco hardware and software support IPSec/Point-to-Point Tunnel Protocol (IPSec/PPTP). The matrix illustrating hardware and software support includes:

  • Cisco IOS® Software releases 12.0.7T and later
  • Cisco VPN 3000 and 5000 concentrators
  • Cisco Secure PIX Firewall and PIX Firewall Software 5.0.x through 6.0.x
  • Cisco Secure VPN Client 1.0 and 1.1
  • Cisco VPN Client 2.5 and later
  • Microsoft Windows 9.x, ME, NT 4.0, and 2000
  • Solaris 2.6
  • Linux 2.2.14
  • Mac OS 9

The Sample Configurations pages provide information on configuring Cisco Secure PIX Firewall 6.0.x and Cisco VPN 3000 clients using IPSec. The sample configuration shows two versions of Cisco VPN 3000 clients connecting and encrypting traffic with the Cisco Secure PIX Firewall as the tunnel endpoint. The sample configuration is based on use of the following equipment and software:

  • PIX Software Release 6.0.1
  • Cisco VPN 3000 Client Version 2.5 and 3.0

IP Telephony Case Study - NEW:
Australian Catholic University Deploys IP Telephony to 2000 Phones across Six Campuses

This recently published IP telephony case study recounts an initiative by Australian Catholic University (ACU) in late 2000 to deploy IP telephony across its six campuses.

In addition to discussing the particular Cisco technology-based architecture of the ACU IP telephony solution, this case study examines in some detail the Australian Academic and Research Network (AARNet), a high-speed IP network that interconnects 37 Australian universities as well as the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). It was over the AARNet backbone that ACU was able to deploy its IP telephony.

The discussion of ACU's IP telephony network and its AARNet backbone focuses on the means by which quality of service (QoS) and class of service (CoS) can be delivered with Cisco routers, servers, and gateways.
