Date: Thursday, December 16, 2004
Location: Chantilly Academy
Goal: A follow-up activity to Herndon event at Cisco office, to introduce girls to networking & the Cisco course
Agenda:
1) Welcome (Academy Administrator & Cisco rep. (3 min.)
2) Intros. (Cisco volunteer/s) - describe your job at Cisco, responsibilities, a typical work day (about 4 min. each, total 8 min.)
3) Lab exercise, facilitated by the instructor. (20 min.)
The Cisco volunteers can circulate & work with the students. The purpose of this lab is to portray the practical application of computer networking knowledge, specifically how students can network their home computers.
In order to keep the lab exercise light, 15-20 minutes, and something that they could relate to on a very personable level I chose:
Lab 5.1.5 because it deals with punching down a cable with an actual data wall jack with a RJ 45.
Lab 5.1.13b because they can then take the cable with the wall jack that they just punched down and connected it to a Ethernet switch, do a simple peer to peer (two computer) network and set the IP addresses, and subnet masks and learn how to share files.
Perhaps try to arrange for a female student to help teach the lab.
4) Reporting back to main group (students): 10 min.
5) Q & A with Cisco volunteers: 10 min.
6) Wrap-up & evaluations: 5 min.
