Digital Divide

Cisco's Commitments

In 1998, as part of Cisco's commitment to bring technology and technology education to under served communities across the United States, the Cisco Networking Academy Program partnered with educational institutions in U.S. Empowerment Zones..

Networking Academies in Empowerment Zones

Cisco has donated necessary networking equipment for the Networking Academy classroom laboratory to high schools, community colleges, four-year universities and non-profit teaching organizations that have established a Networking Academy in an Empowerment Zone. As of December 2005, there are 119 participating Cisco Networking Academies in 30 out of 44 Empowerment Zones. To address issues faced by organizations operating Academies in low-income communities, Cisco also has a site called the Digital Divide Academy Guide. This guide features the strategies and best practices of Academies currently operating in Empowerment Zones and other digital divide communities. These Academies share forms, tools, handbooks and videos that they use in their program operations. Empowerment Zone Academies are also eligible for the Digital Divide Academy Donations program. Cisco ecosystem partners offer donations of equipment, product and services to Academies serving the digital divide.
