Cable Making Event Overview
Description: Teams make patch, crossover, and rollover cables. Cables are judged for craftsmanship and labeling and must pass a wire mapping test. Related curriculum: All curricula Number of players: Two teams made up of 4 to 5 competitors each Preparation time required: 40 minutes to cut cable, divide RJ-45s, print documents, and set up the room Length of time to play: We suggest giving the contestants 30 minutes to build the cables and the judges 10 minutes to judge and score the results.
Component Identification Event Overview
Description: Teams identify and document computer components within the time allotted. Teams receive points for each component they correctly identify. Related curriculum: IT Essentials (may be adapted for CCNA 1-4) Number of players: Two teams made up of 4 to 5 competitors each Preparation time required: 20 to 30 minutes to gather items, set up the room, lay out and label the equipment, print documents, and create an answer key Length of time to play: We suggest giving the teams 35 minutes (90 seconds per component) to complete the activity and the judges 10 minutes to score the results and reset the event.
Computer Building Event Overview
Description: Teams build three computers from the materials provided and create two partitions on each of the hard drives. Scoring is based physical connections, power up, drives reading data, and partitioning the drives. Related curriculum: IT Essentials Number of players: Two teams made up of 4 to 5 competitors each Preparation time required: 40 minutes to set up the room, test the equipment, and download and print documents Length of time to play: We suggest giving the teams 30 minutes to build and partition the computers and the judges 15 minutes to score the results and reset the event.
Home Networking Event Overview
Description: Each team is employed by an ISP. They have been given a work order that directs them to install a Linksys home wireless router onto the cable modem connection and then to configure the security of the wireless network. Teams are judged on physical home connections, wireless connections, and wireless network security. Related curriculum: IT Essentials, CCNA Discovery 4.0: Networking for Home and Small Businesses, or CCNA Exploration 4.0: LAN Switching and Wireless Number of players: Two teams made up of 4 to 5 competitors each Preparation time required: 40 minutes to set up the room, test the equipment, print documents, and download configuration files Length of time to play: We suggest giving the contestants 15 to 25 minutes, per team, to complete the activity and the judges 15 minutes to score the results and reset the event.

Quiz Bowl Event Overview
Description: Teams compete to answer questions on various IT topics. Points are awarded for each correct answer. Router Configuration and Troubleshooting Event Overview
Description: Each team is employed by an ISP. They have been given a work order that directs them to install a home router into the WAN created between the two Cisco routers. They manage the first area of the WAN and must make sure the home computer can get to the second router. Related curriculum: CCNA 2-4 Number of players: Two teams made up of 4 to 5 competitors each Preparation time required: 40 minutes to set up the room, test the equipment, print documents, and download configuration files Length of time to play: We suggest giving the contestants 45 to 60 minutes, per team, to complete the activity and the judges 15 minutes to score the results and reset the event Important note:The router event files in light gray text are kept on a secure site. TAC/Professionalism Overview
Description: The teams, who work at a technical assistance call center, demonstrate their professionalism while helping their clients (the judges) resolve a technical issue. In addition to technical skills, scoring is based on the following skills: speaking, phone, problem-solving, and, as a bonus, time-management. Related curriculum: IT Essentials (may be adapted for all curricula) Number of players: Two teams made up of 4 to 5 competitors each Preparation time required: 10 to 30 minutes to set up the room, test the phone equipment, and download and print documents Length of time to play: We suggest giving the teams 10 to 15 minutes to complete the activity and the judges 10 minutes to score the results and reset the event.
