Cisco VNI Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast, 2013 - 2017

On, February 6, 2013, the updated Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast (2013 - 2017) was publicly released. Mobile networks continue to serve as an essential part of business, education, government, and residential communications, learning, and entertainment. Many residential, business, and mobile IP networking trends are being driven largely by a combination of video, social networking and advanced collaboration applications, termed "visual networking". The Cisco VNI is the company's ongoing effort to forecast and analyze the growth and use of IP networks worldwide. Now in its sixth edition, this annual report projects future mobile data traffic growth and trends over cellular networks (2G, 3G, and 4G) as well Wi-Fi offload. Here's just a sample of what we included in our latest study.

  • How fast is mobile data traffic growing on a global basis?
  • Which regions will grow most quickly and generate the most mobile data traffic?
  • What's the effect of various device/connection types (smartphones, tablets, laptops, and M2M)?
  • Will mobile cloud applications be a significant factor in mobile data traffic growth?
  • How is 4G adoption changing the mobile landscape?

Cisco Service Provider Mobility Announcement

Small Cell Solutions

Improve Capacity and Coverage

Mobile data traffic continues to grow, with the average user projected to generate 1.2 Gb of traffic a month by 2016 (Source: Cisco VNI report 2011). Analytics show that the majority of mobile data usage - in fact close to 80 percent - is indoors and nomadic, rather than truly mobile.

With the increased demands on the network, service providers are investing in small cell solutions to help optimize consumer and business services on mobile devices across 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi networks. These small cell solutions can provide efficient connectivity and coverage for all users.

Cisco Small Cell solutions (Cisco Service Provider Wi-Fi solution and Cisco Licensed Small Cell solution) bring an optimal user experience and spectral efficiencies to operator networks.
