Higher Education Support

Equipment Donations

To help meet the demand for skilled information assurance workers, CIAG helps higher education institutions develop relevant, world-class training environments. Through its Equipment Donation program, CIAG provides enhanced education and research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate information assurance students by increasing students' and professors' hands-on experience.

The CIAG Equipment Donation Program

CIAG supports an equipment donation program for universities and community colleges as well as the Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAE/IAE) designated by the NSA, DHS, and NIST. CIAG donates equipment on a quarterly basis according to Cisco's fiscal year. Higher education institutions are encouraged to apply for an equipment grant at least two (2) quarters ahead of the time the equipment will be needed for classroom use.

Equipment Grant Guidelines

  • Equipment should only be used for network security education, lab exercises, or security-related research.
  • Each grant proposal must include a complete list of equipment with part numbers and quoted Global Sales List (GSL) prices.
  • Recipients of equipment donations are responsible for equipment design, installation, configuration, and maintenance. Maintenance MAY NOT be included in the donation.
  • Universities must sign and comply with the Equipment Donation Agreement as well as respond to the equipment donation survey.
  • Grant recipients are responsible for budgeting their own maintenance contracts.

Please e-mail ciag-education@cisco.com to request more information.

Deadlines for Submission

CIAG awards the grants each Cisco fiscal quarter. Schools must submit their proposals by the stated review deadlines for consideration for funding in that award cycle (see below for deadline time table). Funding cycles have been scheduled to allow the grant of equipment to be ordered in time for the upcoming semester. However, CIAG is not responsible for the timing of order fulfillment. Proposals that are received after the submission deadline will be held for review in the following award cycle.

Proposal Process

  • Submit proposal and supporting documents to ciag-education@cisco.com or e-fax to +1.512.532.0704. In the subject line, please use the following format: Equipment Donation/Name/University.
  • Please use the Equipment Donation Proposal Submission Form (DOC - 32 KB) as a guide; however, it is not necessary to use that particular format.
  • Proposals must be in English.
  • Proposals must be submitted by university professors, associate professors, deans, etc.

Proposal should include the following:

  • Name of university
  • Primary university principal investigator, address, phone, and email
  • Description of the university's expectations from receiving an equipment grant
  • Description of current InfoSec/information assurance curriculum
  • Number of students enrolled in either undergrad or graduate programs
  • Number of students or courses expected to have access to equipment
  • Current information assurance student research projects in need of equipment
  • Brief, one-page description of how the equipment shall further the research, education, and curriculum development of InfoSec/information assurance programs, including a network topology diagram.
  • Detailed equipment list that includes GSL price, part numbers, and quantity
  • Any current or expected research projects with Cisco (active or passive)

CIAG receives many quality proposals; it is not possible to support all of them in a given year. Submitting an equipment donation request does not guarantee a donation. Higher Education Institutions that are awarded a grant may not resubmit a new proposal for this program for a period of 12 months following the award.
