Looking to the Future

Cisco and the Discovery Channel take the lead in connecting people to tomorrow's reality. Watch Cisco IBSG visionary Dave Evans talk about the Connected Bus solution that was co-developed by Cisco IBSG and the City of San Francisco as part of Cisco's Connected Urban Development Initiative.

Connected Urban Development Global Conference 2008—Connecting Cities: Innovation for Sustainability—is the first conference of its kind to focus on how information and communications technology (ICT) intersects with the issues and challenges cities face in regard to climate change and urban sustainability.

The conference, which took place February 20-21 and was co-hosted by Cisco and the city and county of San Francisco, gathered a worldwide community of urban, business, research, academic, and civic leaders committed to developing and sharing best practices around using innovative environmental solutions.

At this 2-day event, participants had the opportunity to attend interactive sessions, discuss their challenges, explore how cities are using ICT to create solutions that help reduce carbon emissions, and establish a working community of collaboration.

The conference agenda included discussions and presentations on the ways in which ICT can help cities address global climate change. Attendees learned how cities are using ICT to increase the efficiency of traffic, manage public transportation systems better, create sustainable real estate models and new work environments, establish new models for public services, and enable city residents to self-manage their carbon footprints.

More than 168 attendees from 27 countries contributed to the success of the conference, providing not only a global view, but also a well-balanced and diverse perspective on the discussion topics and demonstrations.

The next Connected Urban Development Global Conference will take place in Amsterdam, September 23-24, 2008. The topic of the Amsterdam conference will be "Connectivity for Sustainability."
