RFP-Based Research Proposal

Demographic Variation in Technology Use

Project ID:

RFP-2008-042

Title:

Demographic Variation in Technology Use

Summary:

There are many opinions and anecdotal evidence of the differences in personal technology usage between different demographic groups. We seek to assemble a survey of research done in the area, and fund meaningful explorations not covered in the current literature. The question is, what demographic variation in technology use has been documented to date, and which demographic differences still need to be probed.

Full Description:

There is anecdotal evidence of the differences in personal technology usage between various demographic groupings. Some studies have been done, but a coherent picture of critical demographic factors and their impact on technology use has yet to emerge. Cisco encourages research which summarizes relevant existing work, and also generates new insight in the area. Technology areas might include PC, Internet, home wireless, music players, digital video recorders, etc. Example demographic groups might include age, gender, race urban/rural, region, country, religion, earnings, wealth, level of educational achievement, marital status, languages spoken, literacy level, etc. Technology usage may relate to entertainment, personal productivity, or a business activity performed at home. The novelty of any proposed work must be supported by a thorough examination of existing results.

Constraints and other information:

IPR will stay with the University. Cisco expects customary scholarly dissemination of results, and hopes that promising results would made available to the community without limiting licenses, royalties, or other encumbrances.
