What is it like to work here?
I have had so much fun working at Cisco. Every day brings new challenges, lessons, and shows. It is a very upbeat company to work for, with a great sense of family and community.
What is a typical "day in the life" like? What do you spend your time doing?
Every two weeks I change my rotation within CiscoTV. With production engineering, I am in master control- I operate tape decks, “paint” cameras (adjust the colors using the camera control units), patch and route, and so forth. With media compression I create assets to upload to the web, ensure that slide flips occur in sync with the videos, and ultimately provide viewers with the videos on demand and broadcasts. As a video generalist I operate cameras, set up lights, am a control room technician, and so on. With broadcast engineering, I help to set up live shows to stream on the web (the most difficult!). Finally, with maintenance engineering, I am able to learn everything about the technical side of production, including how to make pods (small, portable control rooms). I get to use power tools (super cool!), make wires (and solder!), and so much more. Maintenance Engineering is really fun. Every ten weeks I go back to where I started to learn and apply even more. It’s really a great set up. The coolest thing is that I’m always doing something new and that I get to be part of the crew for so many shows, some even with the CEO!
How do you work together with your team?
I feel that I am part of the CiscoTV team and not just an intern because they treat me as one of their own. We have fun together, have interesting discussions about production, and so on. I see everyone I work with as mentors because they all have so much to teach me and have really taken me under their wings.
Why did you choose to work at Cisco?
I chose to work at Cisco because of the amazing opportunity they were offering me. No other company or network would have allowed me to be as hands on with the equipment as Cisco has. Further, the team I work with is very knowledgeable and they are all amazing teachers, which makes it easier for me to retain and apply what I learn.
What is your favorite thing about working here?
The hands-on aspect, definitely.
What advice would you give to anyone interested in joining Cisco?
Apply! Show that you are dedicated, a hard worker, and interested. It is a great company!
