How is the work-life balance at Cisco?

Prior to joining the company, I was a longtime consultant. I was used to working long hours, traveling a lot, and not having a lot of free time. Cisco has been a great change of pace for me: I still work a lot, but I have a lot more flexibility about my time. I can stay home and work, and can check my email anywhere with my PDA. Work is not really about a place, it's about a function.

Why are you excited about working at Cisco?

There are a lot of things that keep me excited about working at Cisco. Here are my top three picks:

  1. The first business unit that I worked for acquired two companies, and not knowing what the next day would bring was actually big excitement.
  2. I'm making an impact on the business. My role is a tangible role: I create content that our salespeople use, our customers use, and our channel partners use to buy our products. Having ownership of that is really exciting.
  3. I get to see technologies that are three years away from hitting the market. I'm actually working on a product right now that we'll be selling to Enterprises, but it's going to be consumer-facing; you, I, and everyone else, hopefully, are going to be using it. It's really exciting to see that early on.

What is a "day in the life" like working at Cisco?

There is no typical day; every day is different, and I get to wear many different hats. One day, I may be wearing my corporate hat because I am writing content for Cisco.com. Another day, I may be wearing my recruiting hat because I'm interviewing candidates for marketing jobs. On another day, I may be wearing a hat for fun. We have events like our Diwali celebration, where everyone on our floor got together and shared great food. Finally, I may be wearing my explorer hat, when I go out and look for companies to work with on solutions development.
