Why did you decide to join Cisco?
I knew Cisco was a leader in Computer Networking and every technical person dreams of working at the leader firm.
What was your perception of Cisco before you joined and how has it changed?
I was working at a Cisco partner before I joined Cisco so I had a good understanding of the marketplace and my experience as the Network Academy gave me a good understanding of the product line. However I had no idea that Cisco was growing so much in the emerging market and after joining I saw the investment and growth in my region.
How do you describe the Cisco culture?
The Cisco culture somewhat different from country to country and team to team but basically its a lot of top quality people working together in a very fair environment. In Romania I really appreciate that its a very fair and ethical company and all the internal procedures and external practices are fair and ethical and in this marketplace, where everything is changing so quickly and business ethics can sometimes be compromised, that never happens here at Cisco either towards the employees or our customers and partners even when dealing with our competitors!
During Training
Describe your typical day or week:
There with mixed training session with technical and soft and business skills training. After each day at the office and I studied for the exams that we had to pass plus CCIE.
How did you cope with the training?
It was very intense and difficult but its the only way to achieve such strong results. You need to work to work hard to achieve great results and during training I found a balance. It really depends on what you want to get out of it both during training and in your career at Cisco. I achieved CCIE but I was the only one in the program at that time who did, so really you get out of it what you put into it its your choice.
What were your most enjoyable experiences?
During soft skills training we had group exercises and it really helped us to feel like a team. Also during break time you really bond with the other training participants who come from all over the world. You really begin to see that the differences in culture are a great opportunity for learning instead of something to be afraid of.
What were your most challenging? The workload and finding the right balance between working and sleeping. Time management is key and the ability to use the time you have in the most efficient way.
What was life like outside of work?
We had a great time, we went out and enjoyed both each other and the foreign city we were in (Amsterdam). I also took the opportunity to travel Holland during my vacation time.
After Training
Where are you currently based?
Romania, Bucharest
What are the offices like where you work?
Very nice, big modern office in the city centre of Bucharest. Its a nice work environment. We have over 30 people now but we are continuously growing. When I joined we were 5-6 SEs and now were 12 people. Its great to be on a growing team.
Describe your typical day or week:
Because Im in Enterprise its a challenging and unique sector. Most of my time is spent on different aspects of customer relationship management and developing designs for potential projects. I manage demos and presentations for our customers. We also work closely with partners to train and inform them on our service offering. Im specialized in Wireless so I get involved in other projects outside my vertical and its great because it gives me a chance to work with other portfolio of customers and internal teams that dont necessarily fit into Enterprise category I work with a diverse group of people. The overall schedule is more flexible than training and that makes planning and scheduling a challenge but it also makes each day unique and that is GREAT!
What are the most enjoyable aspects to your job?
It would have to be being considered a trusted advisor to my customers. I cannot express the feeling of pride I get when a customer calls asking questions because you are THE person that he can trust. Many times they call for my opinion on non Cisco issues related technical issues just because they want my advice they trust me!
What do you see for yourself in terms of your future career progression?
Its difficult to say because Cisco is expanding extremely fast. When I arrived in Romania there were only two career paths (SE and AM) but now there are so many different options and everyday there is something new I can do. I love my job and I plan to evolve with Cisco over the next five years!
What advice would you give to anyone considering applying to Cisco?
Decide what you want then go for it! You can do anything you want to do at a company that gives you the training and support to grow.

Why did you decide to join Cisco?
Before joining Cisco, I considered applying to many different companies. But then I met a Cisco employee who spoke to me in detail about its environment, the people, the resources and the opportunities available. It wasnt long before I realised what a great company it would be to work for. Im also a strong believer in the importance of well-chosen first steps after University and I therefore wanted to achieve a good first work experience which would have important implications for my future career. Cisco seemed like a very comfortable, secure and supportive environment within which to achieve this objective.
In what way have you developed since joining Cisco?
I have developed many skills both from a research and a development point of view. I have learnt to choose a topic of which I know absolutely nothing, and then conduct research in an efficient and through manner in order to gain an informed understanding. I have also learnt how to apply the research to produce a meaningful outcome, and have also hugely developed my technical understanding of many applications.
What have you learnt about yourself since working at Cisco?
Before joining Cisco, I was thought that I wanted to work in the technical field. Now however, I have learnt that I also enjoy the interactive aspects of working in a team, collaborating with my colleagues and helping each other in the achievement of common goals.
How do you describe the Cisco culture?
Cisco has the ability to tailor its working methods to suit the needs of employees within particular business units. It is extremely flexible, giving employees the freedom and ability to manage our own workloads. Having said that, the culture is very much based on a logical and consistent framework, which encourages attention to detail, planning and project management.
During Training
How was the training delivered?
I was taught soft skills and hard skills both in a class room and on-the-job. It is not rare that even now, an experienced lecturer comes in to Cisco to talk to us about a specific technology. The opportunities for training at Cisco are endless - you really feel that you are developing and learning new things constantly.
Describe your typical day or week:
I normally arrive at the office at 9.30 (although this can vary as the hours we work are very flexible). When I first get to work I go to the break-room and eat breakfast with my colleagues. I then go to my desk and spend a few hours catching up with emails and returning calls and solving urgent issues. Quite often, we have a team meeting to discuss the responsibilities and tasks of each member. I normally have lunch around 12.30 for an hour, and then return to my desk in the afternoon to continue my usual work duties. I try to go to the gym often in order to unwind sometimes during the afternoon or at the end of the day. I normally leave the office around 19.00.
What were your most enjoyable experiences?
For me, the greatest thing was being given real responsibility from the beginning. When I first graduated, I was extremely eager to learn and to meet new challenges Cisco really gave me the opportunity to fulfil these needs. Almost from day one, I was able to solve customers problems, and deal with complex development issues which gave me a real sense of achievement and the feeling that I was being productive within the company.
After Training
What are the offices like where you work?
They are very big, modern and have great amenities such as a subsidised restaurant and gym which offers yoga, spinning and Tai Chi classes.
Do you work as part of a team?
Yes, very much so. I really feel that I help my colleagues, as they help me.
What do you see for yourself in terms of your future career progression?
At present, it is difficult to foresee the future and the path that my career will take. I do really enjoy interacting with people though and so perhaps I will consider a management position such as Product Manager. At Cisco, there really is a lot of freedom to choose how you want your career to develop and we get a lot of support from management and other colleagues.
What advice would you give to anyone considering applying to Cisco?
To get here if you can! The application process is challenging but have confidence in yourself and do your homework make sure you fully understand the area to which you are applying and the commitment that comes with it.
