This session will provide a description of Cisco IPv6 strategy. It will offer an overview of the IPv6 implementation for current release trains of Cisco IOS and associated platforms. It will covers on-going new feature's developments before collecting feedback about features perceived as missing from this roadmap or potential area of improvements.
Also we will touch on what IPv6 IETF WG is working upon, the hot topics, RIR policies and Certifications.
The session starts with a list of IPv6 vulnerabilities and mitigation techniques (often linked to IPv4 similar threats) with topics like Neighbor Discovery, IP spoofing, scanning by worms. It also addresses some specific IPv6 issues like transition mechanisms (specially the tunneling techniques). The transition mechanisms are shown to have latent threats even in networks not yet running IPv6. The last part covers how to securely transport IPv6 on a public Internet (being IPv4 or IPv6) and how to enforce a security policy on an IPv6 networks with firewalls. While the session is mainly for enterprise, SP customers will also benefit from this session.
Service Providers around the world have been trialing and deploying IPv6 for the past several years. These efforts led to gains in design, planning, deployment and operational experience. Most of these activities and the services deployed are not very public and often times unknown. This session presents some of the lessons learned regarding the IPv6 technologies and their integration in service provider infrastructures, some of the service and deployment design choices made based on the envisioned future network and the existing one. The information provided is based on real life examples and covers the most common service provider environments.
Highlights and Lessons Learned from Enterprise Deployment
The enterprise market space is seeing increased interest in IPv6 primarily driven by external factors such as government mandates and IPv4 address exhaustion concerns. This interest placed many enterprises around the world on the IPv6 integration path and whether it they are in a planning phase, a trial phase or even an operational phase, enterprises are learning various IPv6 deployment lessons specific to their environment. This session presents some of the lessons learned from planning, testing and deploying IPv6 in enterprises, the conclusions drawn from analyzing the requirements that some of these environments have and the readiness of IPv6 to address them.
