Live transmission of operation during a World Medical Congress in Athens, with Cisco DMS

Maroussi, October 29, 2008. A pioneering for Greece and Public Health project was announced today by Cisco. The project refers to the real time broadcast, with Cisco DMS, of two gynaecological operations held in Aretaieion Hospital. The operations were broadcasted to the main hall of a central hotel, during the World Medical Congress “7th Athens Congress on Women’s Health and Disease”, which took place in September, in Athens.
The above operations were held by the distinguished surgeons George Kreatsas, Professor and vice rector of the University of Athens and Aggelos Liapis, Professor in the University of Athens. Operations were broadcasted in real time and there was also the opportunity of voice communication and interaction between operating theater and Congress Hall.
The broadcast from Aretaieion Hospital was made through GRNET university network, while in the hotel the access speed was 4 Mbps. The results of video broadcast were impressive regarding definition, smooth flow as well as the required size of the broadcasted image. Regarding voice interaction between operating theater and Congress Hall, OTE videoconferencing service through ISDN public network was used.
01 Pliroforiki was in charge of the broadcasts, using streaming video technology through Cisco Digital Media System platform.
