3. Competition Phases

The Competition consists of three Phases.  Phase One is open to all Contestants.  Based on scores, Selected Contestants will be invited to participate in Phases Two and Three.  Confirm you can participate in all Phases prior to registering for the Competition.  All Competition tests or other submissions must occur at the times and locations indicated by Cisco to be eligible.

During the Competition Exam Period, Contestants participate in up to three phases of exams and practical activities (each, a “Phase”) as described below.

Phase One - Qualifier

Contestants must complete Phase One between September 6, 2010 at 6:00 am and September 24, 2010 at 11:59 pm (“Assigned Phase One Exam Period”). We strongly encourage all Contestants for Phase One to be proctored by your individual Instructor during the Phase One Competition Period.

Phase One will consist of the following:

  • A 60 minute online exam (“Phase One Exam”) that includes 70 theoretical exam questions and 10 questions based on a Packet Tracer 5.3 activity (“Phase One PT Activity”).  The Phase One PT Activity is embedded within the Phase One Exam and Contestants must complete both the activity and all 80 questions within the 60 minute timeframe.

Contestants must sign into the Competition Site using their Academy Connection login credentials to complete the Phase One Exam in the allotted time.  Each Contestant will receive a single score for the Phase One Exam.  Once the exam is open, the time begins and the Contestant may not pause that exam.

Subject to the requirements set forth in Section 4 (“Judging and Notification”), the top scores in each country as noted below in Section 4 among the qualifying submissions will be deemed the Selected Phase One Contestants.

Contestants for Phase One and Phase Two must have Packet Tracer 5.3 installed on the computer being used for those Phases.  You can download Packet Tracer 5.3 at no cost by logging into the Academy Connection website at www.cisco.com/go/netacad.

Phase Two - Nationals

Phase Two must be proctored by a Cisco Networking Academy Instructor.  For Phase Two of the Competition the Selected Phase One Contestants must report at the time and place (classroom, e.g.) determined and proctored by your individual Instructor beginning October 11, 2010 at 6:00 am through October 22, 2010 at 11:59 pm (“Assigned Phase Two Exam Period”).

Phase Two consists of:

  • An online exam featuring 100 questions to be completed in 60 minutes (“Phase Two Exam”), and

  • A practical skills Packet Tracer 5.3 activity which contestants will download from the Competition Site (“Phase Two PT Activity”), complete the PT Activity and then take a PT Activity Exam featuring 20 questions (“Phase Two PT Activity Exam”).  The PT Activity and the PT Activity Exam must both be completed in 90 minutes.  The time will begin once you access the PT Activity Exam.  The PT Activity will be embedded within the PT Activity Exam.

During your Assigned Phase Two Exam Period, go to the Competition Site, login and take the Phase Two Exam, Phase Two PT Activity, and Phase Two PT Activity Exam. You can complete these activities only during your Assigned Phase Two Exam Period. If Selected Contestant is unable to participate in or accept the opportunity to participate in the Competition for any reason, Sponsor shall have no further obligation to the Contestant.

Subject to the requirements set forth in Section 4 below, the top scores in among the qualifying Phase Two Contestants as set out in Section 4 below will be deemed the Selected Phase Two Contestants and be invited to participate in Phase Three.  In addition to the Selected Phase Two Contestants, the top score from each participating country will be deemed the National Winner for that country and will be eligible for the prize listed in Section 5.

Phase Three – International Finals

The Selected Phase Two Contestants will receive a Phase Three competition date and time assignment between November 1-5, 2010 (“Assigned Phase Three Exam Period”).

The Phase Three Exam will take place at a designated location within 90 miles of the Contestant’s Academy location. All costs associated with participation in Phase Three are the responsibility of the Contestants.

Phase Three consists of a series of skills assessments (“Phase Three Exam”) consisting of a NetLab Assessment Activity and a Network Design Presentation:

  • NetLab Assessment Activity – Contestants will complete a 45-minute activity using NetLabs which will be scored by the Phase Three Judging Team.

  • Network Design Presentation – A case study for a network design will be provided 24 hours ahead of the Assigned Phase Three Exam Period.  Contestants must create the Network Design and prepare a presentation in advance.  Presentations must be in electronic format using Microsoft Power Point, Microsoft Word, and/or Microsoft Excel software.  During the Assigned Phase Three Exam Period, Phase Three Contestants will give a 20 minute presentation of the design using the WebEx service.  Judges will have 15 minutes to ask questions of the Phase Three Contestants to evaluate the solution.

Subject to the requirements set forth below in Section 4, the top three (3) scores among the qualifying Phase Three Contestants will be deemed the International Winners (“Final Selected Contestants”) and will be invited to attend a study trip in San Jose, California from January 9 to January 15, 2011.  All other Phase Three Contestants will receive a prize based on their ranking as outlined in Section 5.

General

Should the Exams not be able to be administered for any reason, Contestants may not have an opportunity to take the exam using any other method and may not have an opportunity to participate in the International Competition. In the event of a dispute over the validity of a question or the corresponding answer in Phase One and Phase Two, and in Cisco’s sole discretion, all Contestants will be credited with the full point value of the question or the question will be removed from the Competition.  Contestants may submit any disputes, questions or comments to netriders_latam@external.cisco.com. Disputes must be submitted within two hours of Exam/Activity completion.  Sponsor’s and judges’ decisions regarding disputes are final.

Submissions must be received according to Sponsor’s time no later than the dates and times listed in these Official Rules or in notifications received by Contestants.  Sponsor’s clock shall be the official time keeping device of this Contest. No mail, hand or e-mail deliveries will be accepted, except as expressly set forth in these Official Rules.

None of the Contest Entities are responsible for late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, void, corrupted, garbled, illegible, and/or unintelligible entries, or for any problems or malfunctions Contestants may encounter when submitting their entries or scores. Only complete, valid entries and score reports (collectively “submissions”) will be accepted. Sponsor will not verify receipt of submissions. Incomplete, garbled, corrupted or otherwise illegible submissions are void and will not be accepted. Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify false submissions or submissions suspected of being false. All submissions submitted become the sole property of Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned.  In the event of a dispute as to the identity of a winner, the winner will be deemed to be the authorized account holder of the valid Academy Connection student ID number used to participate in the Contest.
