| Cisco unveils mobility solutions for vertical markets Johannesburg May 23, 2007 – Cisco has announced a number of vertical solutions and other features that illustrate the company’s commitment and innovation in terms of mobility. These include a new wireless location solution and unified wireless network software release, in-store mobility solutions for the retail industry, and first mile wireless solutions that extend data mobility to oil and gas fields. Wireless location solution and new unified wireless network software release Cisco’s Location Solution, which includes the Cisco Unified Wireless Network and integrated partner applications and active/passive tag offerings, is designed to mobilise assets across an enterprise environment. This solution is made possible by a major extension to Cisco’s Unified Wireless Network family, which provides a broad array of rich mobility services and new wireless LAN management capabilities. With the enhancements to the Cisco Location Solution, organisations can track high-value assets and gain realtime visibility into the status of specific devices or their environments. This includes temperature, battery power, humidity levels, usage status, and more. Customers across many industries benefit from this by gaining a new opportunity to monitor and streamline operations, improve inventory management and curb asset loss. Integral to the Cisco Location Solution is the ability to integrate chokepoint and telemetry capabilities. By teaming with Radio Frequency Identity (RFID) solution suppliers such as AeroScout and WhereNet, chokepoints and associated RFID tags can be used in conjunction with a Cisco Unified Wireless Network to optimise the tracking of mobile assets. When a Wi-Fi tagged asset moves through a chokepoint, an alarm can be triggered, thus providing data recording and notification of an asset moving from one area to another. This new integration of chokepoint capabilities with the Cisco Location Solution brings asset tracking to a new level of sophistication and accuracy. The solutions are an important first step in executing Cisco's mobility vision, namely, to deliver highly secure, manageable and extensible mobile solutions that enable businesses to improve their operations and enhance the consumer experience. These offerings are the latest in a series of technology solutions that Cisco has unveiled for the retail industry this year. Cisco’s in-store mobility solutions integrate Cisco Unified Communications and wireless solutions with Cisco Services best practices. The Cisco Unified Wireless Network serves as the platform from which businesses can deliver mobility applications to employees, suppliers and customers, anywhere in the store. This includes protecting the store environment from wireless threats and safeguarding customer financial information. For retailers, there are several compelling benefits of mobility solutions. First, the customer experience is improved with easy access to information and self-service capabilities. Also, operations can be streamlined by increasing employee responsiveness, curbing inventory losses, reducing costs and creating new revenue-generating opportunities. In doing so, the Cisco First Mile Wireless solution helps oil and gas companies increase drilling uptime performance, improve in-field decision making processes and reduce operation costs by transforming isolated drilling sites to connected arms of the headquarter corporate network. “Cisco’s First Mile Wireless solution does not replace the company man or diminish his importance,” explains Massimo Insulla, Drilling and Work Over Deputy General Manager, Petrobel. “What it does is enable the wider team to share some of the burden with him: four eyes are better than two, and eight are better than four. This technology gives us the opportunity to more effectively assist the production team to reach the right decision.” More info can be found at newsroom.cisco.com/dlls/2007/prod_052207c.html?Referring_site=InterOPPressKit&Event=InterOP2007&Position=PressRelease4 About Cisco Systems Cisco, (NASDAQ: CSCO), is the worldwide leader in networking that transforms how people connect, communicate and collaborate.
