Virtualisation

Businesses are faced with ever-increasing operational demands and financial pressures in their data centres. Rising energy costs, disaster preparedness and protection from threats are ongoing concerns. Meanwhile there are constant requirements for faster application deployment and greater business agility.

Cisco's response to these challenges is to fully embrace and enable virtualisation of the data centre. Cisco's Data Centre 3.0 strategy comprises a comprehensive portfolio of virtualisation technologies and services that bring network, compute, storage and virtualisation platforms closer together to provide unparalleled flexibility, visibility, policy enforcement and reduced total cost of ownership to the data centre:

  • The Cisco Unified Computing System unifies network, compute, storage access and virtualisation resources in a cohesive system to reduce total cost of ownership, increase business agility and improve productivity. Based on industry standards, the Unified Computing System is designed to streamline resources, scale service delivery and radically reduce the number of physical devices requiring setup, management, power/cooling, and cabling.
  • The Unified Fabric consolidates data, storage and clustering traffic onto a single high-performance, highly available network that greatly simplifies the network infrastructure and reduces costs. Unified Fabric supports broader data centre virtualisation by providing consistent, ubiquitous network and storage services to all connected devices.
  • VN-Link technologies, including the Nexus 1000V virtual switch for VMware VSphere, deliver consistent per-virtual-machine visibility and policy control for SAN, LAN, and unified fabric.
  • Network-embedded virtualised application networking services allow consolidation of remote IT assets into virtualised data centres.

Borderless Network

The globalised world has new workspaces - productive people are no longer bound by time or geography. Physically separated employees, partners and contributors must collaborate to achieve the organisation's goals. These diverse groups need to be connected to do their work, access data in different places and communicate from anywhere at any time. It is increasingly difficult to adapt the organisation's network for this type of global collaboration in a virtualised environment. A new kind of architecture is required - one that's designed to support these new business requirements.

Cisco is creating a flexible architecture which and delivers a secure, policy-driven, unified platform that drives IT and business efficiency. The Borderless Network is pervasive, cost-effective, energy efficient and adaptable. The Borderless Network is a smart platform for agile delivery of innovative services and applications that enables contributors to securely work from anywhere, using any device, over any network connection to increase productivity and reduce cost.

The Borderless Network encompasses routing, switching, mobility, security and acceleration technologies architected into solutions that align the IT infrastructure to business goals. Cisco applies proven best design practices and broad technology expertise to help customers plan, build and optimise a secure, resilient, reliable network.
