BRKARC-3466Exploring the Engineering Behind the Making of a Switch
Date :Wednesday 6 March at 4:00pm
Abstract :

Have you ever wondered how Cisco builds a switch, what a TCAM is, what a FIB is or ACLs work? This session covers the entire process (soup-to-nuts) on how a product is designed & architected: from how the algorithms for packet/frame forwarding are turned into logic, how that logic is turned into transistors and silicon and how its validated and tested. In addition to the silicon hardware, the session covers the mechanical aspects of switch design as well as the control plane / software associated with a switch. Attendees will learn the processes involved in how a product is designed from beginning to end and what the thought process is involved in deciding what a product does and how it works within this interactive session.

Cisco-on-Cisco

Probably the world's biggest user of Cisco technologies is Cisco itself. A 65,000-strong world-wide corporation, Cisco "drinks its own Champagne" by aggressively deploying its innovations in its internal IT organisation in order to enable business agility and flexibility, achieve new levels of cooperation and collaboration, continually improve customer and partner intimacy and optimise costs.

Consequently Cisco IT has a wealth of "early adopter" experience in the various technology domains. Cisco uses its own experience as a feedback loop back into engineering and product development. Not just in reporting bugs and issues but analysing business benefits such as ease of use, practicality and return-on-investment.

This experience is openly shared with our customers and partners so that the learnings gained and benefits demonstrated are evidenced by real-world experience, not just expectations. Cisco IT enjoys delivering case studies and discussing actual experience of rolling out projects like the world's largest TelePresence network, purpose-built virtualised data centres, pervasive secure mobility and BYOD.
