Cisco 12000 Series Original 4-Port OC-3, 4-Port OC-12,

and 1-Port OC-48 Packet-over-SONET Line Cards

End-of-Sale Announcement

Cisco 12000 Series Original 4-Port OC-3, 4-Port OC-12, and 1-Port OC-48 Packet-over-SONET Line Cards End-of-Sale Announcement

Cisco Systems is announcing the end of sale for the original 4-Port OC-3, 4-Port OC-12 and 1-Port OC-48 Packet-over-SONET (POS) line cards. These line cards have been replaced with newer versions based on the IP Services Engine (ISE) that provide additional features and increased performance, eliminating trade-offs between density and performance. The microcoded adaptive network processors in the Cisco ISE combine the hardware performance of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) with the programmable flexibility of software, enabling a broad range of new services with a simple software upgrade instead of a costly hardware replacement.

Table 1 lists the products and part numbers that will no longer be orderable as of December 1, 2003. Table 2 lists the replacement line cards with associated part numbers.

The line cards in Table 1 have performance limitations when enabling key features such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). In addition, the 4-Port OC-12 and 1-Port OC-48 POS line cards require the use of bundled features as a result of microcode space limitations. The new IP Services Engine (ISE) line cards do not have this performance limitation and can enable all supported features simultaneously.
