Safety Recommendations

Follow these guidelines to ensure general safety:

•Keep the equipment area clear and dust-free during and after installation.

•Keep tools away from walk areas where you and others could fall over them.

•Do not wear loose clothing that could get caught in the chassis. Fasten ties or scarves and roll up shirt sleeves.

•Wear safety glasses if you are working under conditions that might be hazardous to your eyes.

•Do not perform any action that makes the equipment unsafe or creates a potential hazard to yourself or others.

Follow these guidelines when working on equipment powered by electricity:

•Locate the emergency power-off switch for the room in which you are working. Then, if an electrical accident occurs, you can act quickly to turn off the power.

•Disconnect all power by removing the fuses from the fuse and alarm panel before:

–Installing or removing a chassis

–Working near power supplies

•Do not work alone if potentially hazardous conditions exist.

•Never assume that power is disconnected from a circuit; always check the circuit.

•Look carefully for possible hazards in your work area, such as moist floors, ungrounded power extension cables, frayed power cords, and missing safety grounds.

•If an electrical accident occurs, proceed as follows:

–Use caution; do not become a victim yourself.

–Turn off power to the system.

–If possible, send another person to get medical aid. Otherwise, assess the condition of the victim and then call for help.

–Determine if the person needs rescue breathing or external cardiac compressions; then take appropriate action.

FCC Class A Compliance

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio-frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference, in which case users will be required to correct the interference at their own expense.

FCC Part 68

The following instructions are provided to ensure compliance with the FCC Rules, Part 68. This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC rules. This equipment contains a label that includes, among other information, the FCC certification number for this equipment.

Equipment Attachment Limitations

An Industry Canada label identifies certified equipment. This certification means that the equipment meets certain telecommunications network protective, operational, and safety requirements. The Industry Canada does not guarantee the equipment will operate to the user's satisfaction.

Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible to be connected to the facilities of the local Telecommunications Company. The equipment must also be installed using an acceptable method of connection. In some cases, the companies inside wiring associated with a single line individual service may be extended by means of a certified connector assembly (telephone extension cord). The customer should be aware that compliance with the above conditions might not prevent degradation of service in some situations.

Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized Canadian maintenance facility designated by the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment.

Users should ensure for their own protection that the electrical ground connections of the power utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together. This precaution may be particularly important in rural areas.

Users should not attempt to make such connections themselves, but should contact the appropriate electric inspection authority, or electrician, as appropriate.

Ringer Equivalence Number

The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) assigned to each terminal device denotes the percentage of the total load to be connected to a telephone loop that is used by the device, to prevent overloading. The termination on a loop may consist of any combination of devices subject only to the requirement that the total of the REN of all the devices does not exceed five.

Korean Certification Information

The following Korean certification information applies to the Cisco 6160 IP DSL Switch. The certification label on the Cisco 6160 provides the applicable MIC certification number.

Power Supply Disconnection Warning

Chassis Warning—Rack-Mounting and Servicing


Warning To prevent bodily injury when mounting or servicing this unit in a rack, you must take special precautions to ensure that the system remains stable. The following guidelines are provided to ensure your safety:
	•This unit should be mounted at the bottom of the rack if it is the only unit in the rack. •When mounting this unit in a partially filled rack, load the rack from the bottom to the top with the heaviest component at the bottom of the rack. •If the rack is provided with stabilizing devices, install the stabilizers before mounting or servicing the unit in the rack.

Faceplates and Cover Panel Requirement


Warning Blank faceplates and cover panels serve three important functions: they prevent exposure to hazardous voltages and currents inside the chassis; they contain electromagnetic interference (EMI) that might disrupt other equipment; and they direct the flow of cooling air through the chassis. Do not operate the system unless all cards, faceplates, front covers, and rear covers are in place.
