Upgrade the Software Image
If you have a software problem that requires an upgrade to your Cisco
IOS software, contact the SMB TAC to obtain the appropriate software image for
your switch, and then follow these steps to upgrade your switch
software:
-
Download the Cisco IOS software image file to your PC as directed
by the SMB TAC.
Note: This process requires a software image that is in tar file format
(not bin file format).
-
Change your PC's IP address to an address that is compatible the
switch's IP address. Refer to the LAN Addressing Worksheet if you do not know
the switch's IP address.
For example, if the switch's IP address is 192.168.10.2, you could
change the PC's IP address to 192.168.10.50. To change the IP address on your
PC, go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Dial-Up Connections
> Local Area Connection > Properties > TCP/IP Properties. For
more information, refer to
Configure
an IP Address on Your PC.
-
Use the straight-through Ethernet cable to connect the Ethernet
interface of your PC to port 1 of the switch.
-
Launch a web browser on your PC.
-
Enter
http://switch-IP-address
in the browser's
address field.
-
When the device manager screen appears, go to the Contents menu and
click Software Upgrade.
-
Click Browse to locate the software image file
that you downloaded to your PC.
-
Click Upgrade.
-
When you receive a warning message that you are about to upgrade
your switch software, click OK.
-
Wait while the switch upgrades the software. The Upgrade Software
window displays the status of each stage of the process. Do not use or close
this browser session while the upgrade is in process, and do not access the
device manager from another browser session.
-
When you see a message that the upgrade is successful, wait for the
switch to restart with the new software image. When the switch has restarted,
close the browser session and launch the device manager again.
Note: If you see an error message that the upgrade process does not
complete, see Troubleshoot the
Procedure.
-
When the device manager screen appears, go to the Contents menu and
click Dashboard to confirm that the new software version is
shown in the Software field.
