Back up and Recover your Catalyst Switch Configuration with CNA
This document explains how to back up and recover the configuration of
your Cisco Catalyst Switch.
Connect your PC to the Switch
Follow these steps to prepare for the Back up and to Restore your
switch configuration to your PC:
-
Change the IP address of your PC to match the IP address of the
switch. Refer to the LAN Addressing Worksheet if you do not know the IP address
of the switch. For example, if the IP address of the switch is 192.168.10.2,
change the IP address of the PC to 192.168.10.50. To change the IP address of
your PC, go to Control Panel > Network and Dial-Up
Connections > TCP/IP Properties. For more
information on how to configure an IP address on your PC, refer to
Configure
an IP Address on Your PC.
-
Connect the Ethernet interface of your PC to port 1 of the switch
with a straight-through Ethernet cable.
Note: To connect your PC to the Catalyst Express 500 switch, refer to
the
Configure
Security for Catalyst Express 500 Switch with Cisco Network Assistant on
how.

you get a Confirmation dialog box. This conformation states whether you want to
save the configuration of the switch to NVRAM or not.
Click Yes to save the configuration.
-
On successful completion of the Back up, this Task complete message
appears:
Click OK to exit the Configuration
Archive window.
Note: The Back up configuration file is stored in this location on your
PC. C:\Documents and Settings\<login-id>\.networkassistant\backups. The
<login-id> is the workstation/network login ID.
Recover your switch configuration
If the configuration file on your switch is altered or corrupted, you
can use a back up copy of your configuration to restore your settings quickly.
You can restore the switch configuration from your PC only, if the switch
configuration back up is done already with CNA.
Follow these steps to recover your startup configuration
file:
-
Type the IP address of the switch in the Connect To field.
Click Connect.
-
On the Features tab, click Maintenance
>Configuration Archive.
-
In the Configuration Archive window, click
Restore. Enter these default values:
-
Select rootswitch from the Hostname
list.
-
Select the configuration file that you want to restore to the
switch from the Backed-Up Configurations list. Make sure you select the correct
configuration file by verifying the Backup Note that you entered while taking
the backup.
Click Restore Configuration from PC.
-
On successful restoration of the Configuration file to the switch,
this Task Complete message appears:
Click OK to exit the Configuration Archive
window.
-
In the Info: Configuration Archive window, click
Reload Device Now.
Click OK. The switch boots with the new
configuration file.
-
Close the CNA Application and launch it again to reconnect to the
switch.
Note: If the new configuration has a different IP address configured
