Cisco Routers

Use these documents to set up your Cisco router for the first time.

1.   Site Survey

The SMB Support Assistant Site Survey is a unique set of instructions designed to help you set up and document your network. If you want to set up a new network, complete the site survey first so that you will have the proper documentation to configure each device.

2.   Set Up and Configure Your Router

Use these documents to set up your router hardware and to configure your local network and Internet connection. The basic configuration described in this series of documents does not protect your network from attack or unauthorized access. To set up security, see Secure Your Network.

3.  Create Virtual LANs (VLANs)

Use these documents to configure virtual LANs (VLANs) on your router. VLANs allow you to set different levels of security within your network in order to provide the appropriate level of security for each device. In most cases, you must have a switch in order to configure VLANs on your network.

Note: Cisco 800 series and SB100 series routers do not support VLANs.

Troubleshoot Your Router

Use these documents to troubleshoot basic problems with your Cisco router.

Upgrade the Software on Your Router

Use these documents if you need to upgrade the operating software on your router in order to fix a bug or to repair a corrupted software image. If you have already configured the router, you can save your current configuration and then reload the configuration after you complete the upgrade process.
