This session provides an overview of capacity and performance management methodologies recommended for high availability and optimal performance. The session starts with an introduction to capacity planning, outlining a capacity planning model and discussing common resource bottlenecks and their affect on networks. This is followed by a discussion of information collection techniques for capacity planning that includes high-level identification of SNMP MIB variables, collection methods, tools, and reporting. The last section discusses capacity and performance management best practices recommended to ensure consistent performance. Best practices include capacity service level agreements, capacity area definitions, peak/average threshold analysis, performance/capacity baselining, network what-if analysis, application what-if analysis, tuning, WAN service subscription parameters, upgrade planning, and capacity/performance exception management.
