Getting Started with Operating the Network

The goal of this process is that you will successfully operate your network day-to-day.

Before You Begin: Complete the Configuration and Provisioning process for all components in your application. Be sure you have completed the Verification Checklist to verify accurate configuration of all components. Refer to Configuring Cisco EGW for tasks involved in setting up Cisco EGW initially.


Monitoring Status and Performance

Tasks

Task Steps

Check or change status of components provisioned on the Cisco EGW 2200.

  1. Open Cisco EGW Administration.
  2. In the left navigation menu, click the desired component. Available Status Information lists components whose status you can display.
  3. If a component's status is unexpectedly out of service, go on to Getting Started with Troubleshooting.

Available Status Information

Status is in service or out of service unless otherwise noted.

  • Cisco EGW: Operating state—Active, Standby, or OOS (out of service). This is a display field only. You cannot take a Cisco EGW out of service, you can only change it from active to standby or vice versa.
  • Media gateway:
    • MGCP Status of transport links
    • Backhaul Status of transport links
    • T1/E1 Spans, Signaling Path State
  • Cisco CallManager
    • H.323 Interface Status of transport links and signaling paths
    • CTI Manager
    • AXL Server
  • Cisco Unity SIP Interface
    • Transport links
Verify communication with components provisioned on the Cisco EGW.
  1. Open Cisco IPT Platform Administration.
  2. Click Utilities > Ping. Refer to Cisco IPT Platform Administration online help for more information.
Check Cisco EGW memory and CPU usage.
  1. Open Cisco IPT Platform Administration.
  2. Click Show Status > Platform. Refer to Cisco IPT Platform Administration online help for details on memory and CPU fields.

 

Check Cisco EGW hardware information.
  1. Open Cisco IPT Platform Administration.
  2. Click Show Status > Hardware. Refer to Cisco IPT Platform Administration online help for details on hardware information
Check the Cisco EGW software version.
  1. Open Cisco IPT Platform Administration.
  2. Click Software Upgrade > Software Version > Retrieve. Refer to Cisco IPT Platform Administration online help for details on software version information.
Display ongoing call information.

You can easily monitor total calls and call rate per second in terms of successful and failed calls tracked for the last 15 min, 30 min, and 24 hours.

  1. Open Cisco EGW Administration.
  2. On the Cisco EGW Home page, check call details under Call Information.

Monitor call traffic

You can monitor call traffic, finding call history based on Call Ref No, Calling Number, or Called Number.

  1. Open Cisco EGW Administration.
  2. Click Call History.
  3. Choose your search criteria and click Show. Refer to Cisco EGW Administration online help for instructions on performing searches. For help interpreting results, refer to Cisco EGW Reason Code Translations.

Cisco EGW Switchover, Restart, and Shutdown

Tasks

Task Steps

Switch from active to standby Cisco EGW 2200.

Note: You must be using a fault-tolerant configuration to perform a switchover.

  1. Open Cisco EGW Administration for the active Cisco EGW.
  2. On the Cisco EGW Home page, click Switch Over to change the standby Cisco EGW to active, and the active Cisco EGW to standby. Refer to Cisco EGW Administration online help for information on switchover.

Note: All provisioning information resides on both Cisco EGW hosts.

To understand important redundancy concepts, refer to Planning for Redundancy.

Restart the Cisco EGW 2200.

You can restart the current software version or you can restart to the previous version. The previous version is maintained on an inactive, second partition. You might want to revert to it if you had problems with an upgrade

If you are able to access Cisco IPT Platform Administration:

  1. Open Cisco IPT Platform Administration.
  2. Make sure you have backed up the Cisco EGW database.
  3. Under System click Poweroff or Reboot and choose the desired type of reboot:
    • Reboot Current Version, to restart the current Cisco EGW version.
    • Switch Versions and Reboot, to restart and switch to the Cisco EGW version on the other partition, typically the previous version.

Note: During system poweroff you may get a message that the shutdown of TimesTen failed. The failure to shut down TimesTen will not cause any problems. This issue will be fixed in a later release.

If you cannot access Cisco IPT Platform Administration, use the Cisco IPT Platform Administration CLI. Refer to the Cisco IPT Platform Administration CLI Guide and use the system command with the restart or switch-ver parameter.

Shut down the Cisco EGW 2200.

If needed you can shut down the Cisco EGW. This task performs a graceful shutdown of the software and all processes. You can perform this task with Cisco IPT Platform Administration or the Cisco IPT Platform Administration CLI.

If you are able to access Cisco IPT Platform Administration:

  1. Open Cisco IPT Platform Administration.
  2. Make sure you have backed up the Cisco EGW database.
  3. Under System click Poweroff or Reboot > Poweroff System:. Refer to Cisco IPT Platform Administration online help for information on precautions to take before shutting down.

Note: During system poweroff you may get a message that the shutdown of TimesTen failed. The failure to shut down TimesTen will not cause any problems. This issue will be fixed in a later release.

If you cannot access Cisco IPT Platform Administration, use the Cisco IPT Platform Administration CLI. Refer to the Cisco IPT Platform Administration CLI Guide and use the system poweroff command.

Routine Maintenance

Tasks

Task Steps
Display, update, or delete component configurations .
  1. Open Cisco EGW Administration.
  2. Use the left navigation menu to open the desired component's configuration.

Refer to Cisco EGW Administration online help for component-specific information on component properties and guidelines on updating or deleting specific components.

Caution: Before updating, be sure to back up the current configuration.

Back up the Cisco EGW 2200 database.

Nightly backups are recommended.

Before you begin: Have available this information on the server to which you are backing up the database: Host ID, user ID, and password. Know if you are using secure (SSH) or non-secure backup.

Upgrade Cisco EGW 2200 software.

Refer to Cisco EGW 2200 Release Notes for important information on the upgrade and to Upgrading the Cisco EGW 2200 Software  for the basic upgrade procedure.
