Renault and Cisco Systems creating the Next Generation Car

The Renault Prospect & Research Division and Cisco Systems Technology Center have teamed up on a revolutionary IPv6 e-Vehicle project, equipping a Renault car with a 3200 Mobile Access Router and a set of advanced applications such as vehicle remote diagnostic, centralised support, and off-board navigation system, together with classic Internet connectivity for the passengers.

The Renault car being prototyped is equipped with a Cisco 3200 Mobile Access Router (MAR) which permits seamless IPv6 mobile connectivity to Internet for both passengers and the car.

Together, Renault and Cisco Systems received an award (Dr Jun Murai Award, IPv6 promotion council) in Tokyo in 2003 for this innovation.

This year, Renault and Cisco improve the prototype by adding an innovative Car-to-Car communication solution to support services such as Inter-vehicle hazard warning, Enhanced “ Floating Car data” communication in a “car community”, and several other security services to improve safety on the road.
The innovative protocol developed by Cisco will enable Car-to-Car communication integration in a global “Internet Protocol” approach. Several domains will benefit from this innovation (Fleet management, Rescue services, Public Transport…etc…)

In 2003, Cisco Systems and Renault have released the “IPv6 Car”, a significant “proof-of-concept” to validate the integration of IP based technology in the automotive industry.
In 2004, the “Networks in Motion” car will bring innovation one step forward, by proposing a global approach including car-to-car communication.
