The Trend:
Many organisations are converging their separate voice and data networks into a single, powerful, highly flexible network. The reason for this convergence is the emergence and growth of IP Telephony: according to Frost & Sullivan, the total IP market grew by over 300% in revenue from 2000 to 2001. In fact, the Asia Pacific IP market is expected to record an annual compound growth rate of 65% by 2008. High performance and robust switching is at the heart of the new converged network in order to deliver the Quality of Service that users expect, and let you enjoy the cost savings associated with convergence.

Factors Driving the Trend:
There are many reasons to support this kind of technology adoption:
IP Telephony leverages existing LAN/WAN infrastructure and capabilities.
The Internet now supports call traffic with QoS matching that of traditional TDM networks.
IP Telephony usage improves operational expenses without losing functionality. Trimble CIO Bob Denis noted, "Tomorrow (the Centrex provider) could walk in and say, 'we're hiking our prices by 20%.' We want to stabilise our expense base without sacrificing functionality" — and that means IPT.
A single network to manage means significant savings in operational costs.
Data and voice convergence paves the way for rich IP-based business applications, including unified messaging.

The Solution:
Cisco has developed a complete IP Telephony infrastructure built on Cisco AVVID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Data). AVVID includes the ability to look deep into packets and prioritise them according to content and application, providing the granular QoS and high reliability required for VoIP. All Catalyst Series switches are integral to this infrastructure, with specific IP Telephony modules enabling robust IP Telephony capabilities in your network.
The Cisco Communication Media Module (CMM) is a Catalyst 6500 line card providing flexible and high-density T1 and E1 gateways, connecting existing TDM networks to IP Communications networks, and providing connectivity to the PSTN, while taking full advantage of IP communications. The Catalyst 6500 Inline Power10/100BaseT Ethernet Switching Interface Modules support up to 48 ports per module, phone discovery, and autosensing/autonegotiation. The platform can handle up to 384 multiservice ports for data and voice terminal connections.
The Catalyst 4500 Inline Power 10/100BaseT Ethernet Switching Interface Modules offer 48 10/100BASE-T (RJ45) inline power Ethernet ports. This support enables the switch to deliver 48V DC power directly through the Ethernet wire to power IP phones and wireless access points..
The Catalyst 4500 Access Gateway Module enables organizations to implement integrated IP telephony and WAN services at campus and integrated branch office sites.
The Cisco Catalyst 3550-24 PWR inline power switch is a stackable, multilayer, 24-port 10/100 switch with 2 Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC)-based Gigabit Ethernet ports — ideal for integrated voice, video, and data applications.

The Proof:
Trimble — one of the industry's leading providers of GPS, laser and optical positioning technologies — upgraded its LAN with Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series switches to enable an IP Telephony system. The platform offers the right combination of QoS, network convergence, port density, and price to suit Trimble's budget, and their business model.

Trimble now uses Cisco IP Telephony to link its offices in the US. Read more about this success story here (Size: 226Kb).
