In a medium-size campus deploy a Cisco Catalyst 6500 or a Cisco Catalyst 4500 in the wiring closet. In the collapsed core/distribution backbone layer deploy two Cisco Catalyst 6500s, in a redundant configuration for the highest levels of availability with a broad range of integrated service modules, WAN and campus interconnect options. A Cisco Catalyst 4507R is a lower density alternative; in either case, redundant supervisors should be considered to enable the resiliency needed in the access and core layers. As a third option, consider the highly resilient capabilities offered by the Cisco Catalyst 3750 which uses Cisco StackWise technology. The Cisco Stackwise technology enables a stack of Catalyst 3750 to operate with 1:N redundant master switches, providing extremely high levels of redundancy for both the access layer and lower density core/distribution layer.
In the wiring closet of a medium sized branch, deploy a Cisco Catalyst 3750, 3550, 2970 or 2950 as an individual switch, or in a stacked configuration.
