Net Hot Spots
Just step into buildings to access Internet
Today May 25, 2001

The next time you need access to the Internet, forget about having to look for access points to plug you in.

Just head on down to UOB Plaza or Shaw House, which have been equipped with wireless broadband Internet technology.

Broadband communication provider, DavNet, is leveraging on Cisco products to transform buildings around Singapore into "hot spots" that give mobile professionals high-speed wireless Internet access in the open areas of the buildings.

With such a move, enterprises will realize tremendous employee productivity gains, said Cisco.

Mr Bill Chang, Cisco System's Singapore managing director, said: "In the Internet economy, empowering employees with access to corporate resources anytime, anywhere, is a powerful advantage."

Just imagine if you are a business professional, requiring access to the Internet when you meet a client. In the "hot spot", you will get easy access to client information.

UOB Plaza and Shaw House are the first buildings to be hot spots that are part of the Cisco Internet Mobile Office (CIMO) initiative.

CIMO will make UOB Plaza even more desirable location, said Mr Louis Chan, vice president, Property Division, United Overseas Bank.

Next month, 10 more buildings will be equipped to offer the service.

The target is to have 48 hot spots by year's end in the Central Business District, Orchard Road and the Business Parks of Jurong and Tampines.

But users will have to fork out a subscription of between $30 and $70 each month.

They will also need a wireless LAN card, costing some $400, to be installed into their notebooks or personal digital assistants (PDA).
