Personal Assistant - 1.4(x) |
1.4(6) and earlier are affected |
Problem Description
The operating systems of most Cisco products that support Daylight Saving Time (DST) have built in mechanisms to automatically change the times, based on current user-selected rules. Once the new DST is implemented, the time on devices that maintain time zone information will continue to change according to the old method, unless changes are made.
Background
On April 30, 2007, Hon Rick Barker, Minister of Internal Affairs, announced a three week extension to the period of daylight saving. Daylight saving now runs from the last Sunday in September until the first Sunday in April.

Problem Symptoms
If the changes described in this Field Notice are not completed, Cisco Personal Assistant will execute Rule sets off by one hour between the last Sunday in September and the first Sunday in October. After the first Sunday in October, the problem will correct itself. However, on third Sunday in March of the following year until the first Sunday in April, the problem will return. After the first Sunday in April, the problem will correct itself but will repeat each year until the patches are applied.
Workaround/Solution
Workaround:
Rule Sets may be modified manually for the periods when Cisco Personal Assistant is not compliant to the new New Zealand Daylight Saving Time rules.
Solution:
In order to correct Cisco Personal Assistant for the latest Daylight Saving Time changes, three steps are required:
1) Upgrade to Cisco Personal Assistant 1.4(6)
2) The Windows OS must be patched with 2000.4.4aSR10 or 2000.4.5aSR2.
3) Update the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) using the Timezone Updater tool from Sun Microsystems.
Cisco Personal Assistant upgrade:
Upgrade to 1.4(6) by following the instructions in the pa-fmu_1-4-6_readme.txt file. Registered users may obtain the Cisco Personal Assistant update from here: Cisco Personal Assistant Software Download (registered customers only) .
Cisco Windows OS update:
The Windows OS update may be obtained from the Unified Communications Manager & Voice Apps Crypto Software Download page.
Select the appropriate version based on the defined minimum OS requirement.
win-OS-Upgrade-K9.2000-4-4a-sr10.exe
(Minimum OS requirements: Any OS version upgraded with win-OS-Upgrade-K9.2000-4-4.exe, win-OS-Upgrade-K9.2000-4-4a.exe, or Fresh install of OS 2000.4.4)
win-OS-Upgrade-K9.2000-4-5a-sr2.exe
(Minimum OS requirements: Any OS version upgraded with win-OS-Upgrade-K9.2000-4-5a.exe or Fresh install of OS 2000.4.5a)
JRE Update:
Visit http://java.sun.com/javase/tzupdater_README.html and obtain the latest TZupdater tool. As of this the publish date of this field notice, it is version tzupdater-1.2.2-2007g.zip. Follow these steps:
a) Stop all the Personal Assistant (PA) services from the service control panel. During this time, Cisco Personal Assistant will not function.
b) Download the patch. The patch comes in the form of a zip file.
c) Extract the contents of the zip file, place the contents of the zip file to the folder of your choice on the Personal Assistant System. There should now be a file present named "tzupdater.jar"
d) Open a command-line window and browse to the path where "tzupdater.jar" is located
e) Issue the following from the command-line:
"%PAROOT%\jre142_09\bin\java" -jar tzupdater.jar -u -v -bc (including the quotes)
Where %PAROOT% specifies the location where your Cisco Personal Assistant is installed.
f) The output of the above command will be:
java.home: C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\Personal Assistant\jre142_09 java.vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc. java.version: 1.4.2_09 JRE time zone data version: tzdata2003a Embedded time zone data version: tzdata2007f Extracting files... done. Making changes for JDK 1.1 compatibility... done. Renaming directories... done. Validating the new time zone data... done. Time zone data update is complete.
g) To verify the update was successful, issue the same command:
"%PAROOT%\jre142_09\bin\java" -jar tzupdater.jar -u -v -bc (including the quotes)
and verify the returned text contains this statement:
"You have the same version as the embedded one."
If this update needs to be reversed for whatever reason, steps are provided in the ReadMe.html file extracted from the downloaded tzudater zip file.
h) Reboot the PA machine.
Other Information:
If the PA components namely, the PA Server, PA speech server andthe PA web server are installed separately, apply the JRE patch on each of the machines having these components.
