Problem Description
Incorrectly assembled fan trays on the Catalyst 6500 six-slot chassis have the fans installed in the fan tray bracket in a reversed orientation.
Background
An error in a supplier's process caused a few units to be assembled incorrectly. These units have the fan blades in the reversed orientation. The airflow direction through the chassis is reversed when using the affected fan trays. The correct airflow is evacuating the chassis. Good units should have the air pulled through the chassis and blowing out the left side when facing the card cage and fan tray access side of the chassis.
Problem Symptoms
Although the airflow direction is reversed when using an affected fan trays, there is no immediate impact to the functionality of the system. However, continued use of this affected fan tray may cause overheating in some configurations resulting in unscheduled system shutdowns.
Workaround/Solution
Affected units can be identified by serial number of chassis or by visual inspection. The affected units need to have the Fan Tray replaced.
Please confirm the serial number is within the ranges specified above. Also verify by visual inspection that the blades are reversed. Once that is confirmed, please use the standard RMA process to obtain an unaffected fan blade.
How to Identify Serial Numbers
Affected units can be identified through the chassis serial numbers listed above. To identify the serial number of your chassis, use the following commands:
When using CatOS, use the show version command.

How To Identify Hardware
You can identify affected hardware though visual inspection.
Good fan tray.

Bad fan tray.

To verify correct fan orientation, check for labels on fan rotor. The white or silver round labels located on each fan rotor hub should be visible when viewed through the ventilation perforation on the left side (fan tray side) of the chassis.
Please see the photos below for the differences between Good and Bad units partially inserted, you can see the labels through the ventilation performations on good units.
Good fan tray.

Bad fan tray.
