ONS15327 XTC |
Affected in 3.x |
Problem Description
When running software version 3.x on a Cisco ONS 15327, accessing the diagnostics file using a DCC connection may cause an XTC card to reset. The diagnostics file retrieval stops at between zero and one percent. Communication to the shelf is lost and the XTC resets. The user is returned to the network, and the following Java message is displayed:
Get Diagnostics: Exception:java.io.InterruptedIOException:Read Timed Out
On the ONS 15327, the cause for this bug is a deadlock condition in the processing of version 3.x DCC traffic. This bug is not present on ONS 15327 version 4.0 software. This issue is not applicable to the ONS 15454 or SDH platforms.
A DDTS bug, CSCdz42830, has been opened for this issue. There is currently no workaround or resolution in version 3.x. To avoid a possible XTC card reset, do not access the diag file. The fix is available in release 4.0.
Background
Accessing or retrieving a diagnostics file is a basic troubleshooting operation. An active XTC card reset will cause ethernet traffic to fail for two to five minutes while the spanning tree reconverges.
During TAC lab tests, the ONS 15327 failed 50-100 percent of the time using Windows 2000 and Internet Explorer or Netscape. Other tests were conducted with Windows NT and Windows 95 with Internet Explorer and experienced similar failure rates.
Problem Symptoms
Accessing or retrieving a diagnostic file from an ONS 15327 NE node over a DCC connection causes the active XTC to reset.
-
A reset occurs when the standby XTC card becomes active and the diag file is requested.
-
A reset occurs when using Internet Explorer during diag file retrieval testing, but does not when using a PC connection (Windows NT JRE 1.3.1_05).
-
No problem was found when the ONS 15327 was connected to the LAN or using a direct connection.
Workaround/Solution
To avoid DCC connection loss and XTC resets, do not access the diagnostic file if running version 3.x codes. The fix will be available in version 4.0.
