Problem Description
Between October 2001 and October 2002, Cisco's VGDBU engineering team identified hardware problems in the Cisco AS5850 chassis Route Switch Controller (RSC) card. The issues discovered are summarized below:
| Description | Comments |
|---|---|
| TCAM Failure at Power-Up | reported internally |
| L3 Tag SRAM Power Pins Unconnected | reported internally |
| NVRAM Corruption | reported internally |
| "CPU out of Range" error | reported by one (1) customer |
| Possible Connector Misalignment Upon Card Insertion |
Background
The above problems were all identified on boards within development and in manufacturing. No customer reported problems have yet been positively identified as caused by either of the above two issues.
Problem Symptoms
| Summary | Description |
|---|---|
| TCAM Failure at Power-Up | It is possible that, upon power-up of the AS5850, the TCAM chips on the RSC Gigabit Ethernet module will fail to initialise correctly. If this happens, the RSC should continue to respond normally to the RS232 console, but the two Gigabit Ethernet ports as well as the front panel Fast Ethernet port will not function correctly. They may be reported as "UP," but they will not pass traffic |
| L3 Tag SRAM Power Pins Unconnected | During normal operation of the RSC, it may crash and display an error message indicating a bus error, possibly associated with a parity error of some type. |
| NVRAM Corruption | During internal engineering stress testing, it was found that the NVRAM contents can be corrupted, causing configuration information to be lost and the RSC rendered non-bootable. This problem has not been observed under normal operating conditions. |
| "CPU Out of Range" Error | During normal operation of the RSC, while or any time after it boots, it may crash and display the error message: "%ERR-1-GT64120 (PCI-0): Fatal error, CPU out of range error" After this crash, you may need to reload the RSC or power cycle the entire AS5850 to resume normal operation. There is no way to predict when or how often a particular RSC may experience this problem. |
| Possible Connector Misalignment Upon Card Insertion | When cards are inserted into the AS5850 chassis, possible misalignment of the small (power) connector may result in physical damage to the card and to the backplane. The design has been improved to minimize this risk. Meanwhile, when installing new cards, always exercise appropriate caution and be sure to follow procedures outlined in your Hardware Installation Guide. |
Workaround/Solution
Boards exhibiting any of the above known problems should be swapped out and returned as an RMA. To temporarily recover from either of the above problems you must either reload the RSC, or in some cases, physically power-cycle the AS5850. However, doing so is not a guarantee that the problem(s) will not reappear..
