Problem Description
The router will start to boot and will either hang or crash with a bus error exception. The system may produce the following on the console just prior to crashing or hanging:
CCCCC
Background
The platforms affected require that the first file on bootflash be a boot image. If it is not, the bootstrap software attempts to boot whatever image is first on bootflash. While attempting to boot a non-image file the system either crashes or hangs.
Problem Symptoms
If the system is experiencing this problem, the following symptoms are displayed on the console. Please refer to the equipment type you have.
For NPE-xxx:

Workaround/Solution
-
Send a break sequence to the console as the router starts the boot process and the router drops into ROMMON.
-
In ROMMON, boot directly to an image on bootflash, PCMCIA flash or flash disk.
-
When Cisco IOS® Software loads, verify that the first image on bootflash is a valid boot image.
