Problem Description
Cisco Metro 1500 850 nanometer (nm) line modules with serial numbers matching the list above are being recalled.
Background
The Cisco Metro 1500 is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) product sold by Cisco that incorporates an automatic laser shutdown (ALS) mechanism on all 850 NM line modules. The revision B0 Metro 1500 850 NM modules have firmware code that can cause the ALS mechanism to fail. When automatic shutdown (ALS) has failed, the milliwatts (mW) output of attenuated or multiplexed 850 NM line cards can reach above Class 1M International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) or Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limits. IEC Class 1M indicates eyesafe mW output as long as the laser source is not viewed directly using optical instruments (magnifiers). For the IEC, output above Class 1M requires special safety warning labels, and ALS or shutter protection for field operators.
Problem Symptoms
In the Cisco Metro 1500 850 nm line modules identified above by serial number, the ALS mechanism can malfunction on revision B0 line modules.
Workaround/Solution
If you have one of the Metro 1500 850nm line modules identified above, please replace these modules by using the upgrade program below. If this upgrade program is not available to you, please generate a Return Material Authorization (RMA) and specify ARFN (Administrative Request - Field Notice) as replacement type.
Upgrade Program
If you have any questions concerning the upgrade program, you can e-mail upgrades-info@cisco.com.
Note: Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required fields.
2 When entering more than one serial number in the serial number text entry field, be sure to type a comma between each serial number to separate them.
