Problem Description
The system will not recognize files on the Flash Disk at ROM monitor (ROMMON) level, and as a result may experience an intermittent boot up anomaly.
When this problem occurs, it's usually when the flash card is accessed between 10 and 20 times at the ROMMON level.
Note:? Systems ordered after November 14, 1999 are not affected.
Background
The intermittent nature of this problem contributed to the delay in Cisco recognizing that there was an issue with Flash Disk boot up reliability. After the problem was identified, there was swift action to provide a solution. Please see the Workaround/Solution section in this field notice for more details.
Problem Symptoms
Without the new Boot ROM, the monlib on the Flash Disk card is not reliably recognized at the ROMMON level. As a result, an affected system will not boot.
This occurs only at the ROMMON level. After the system is running the IOS® Software, the Flash Disk is accessible.
Workaround/Solution
Perform a show version command at the router command line interface and note the Boot ROM version output (for reference, the relevant text is highlighted in green).
Example output:
